Police rescue two men clinging to a cooler after their boat sinks in outer harbor

Police rescue father and son from Boston Harbor after boat sank

Boston Police report officers on one of its harbor boats rescued a father and son whose boat sank off Graves Light Wednesday evening, leaving them treading water with just one life jacket and a floating cooler between them.

On approach, the officers observed a vessel about 100 yards off the coast of Graves Light and could only see a small portion of the vessel “Glory Days” bow above water. As the officers got closer, they observed a blue object floating in the water, and moments later, observed two men floating holding on to a blue cooler.

The men reported to the officers that they were weak and were having difficulty keeping their heads above water. The officers rescued the men by pulling them from the water and on to the police boat. Later, the men reported their boat’s engine got tangled in lobster lines and began to take on water, eventually sinking and causing them to abandon ship.

Both were treated by EMTs when BPD returned them to a dock connected to terra firma. A company managed to lift the boat out of the water and tow it to Thompson's Island, police say.

This is why experienced sailors never set out without a big cooler of beer. Well, one reason why.

and why it's important to drink the beer as quickly as possible, so as to leave the cooler empty in case of emergencies.

Sounds like they did just that.

On what do you base your accusation that they were operating the boat while drunk?

A life jacket per person.

How do you go out on a little boat in Boston Harbor without at lease one life jacket per person? If you tried that on the Charles River the MDC Police would ticket you immediately. I've seen it on the Fourth anyway.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he snatches your beer cooler, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'.

Next time there's an officer-involved shooting in Boston, can we expect the bodycam video to be available on YouTube within 48 hours?
