And now the rest of the story: Mitt vs. the rapper

Guy who's supposedly a rap star (Ed. note: What the hell do I know?) reveals he was the guy in the tete-a-Mitt on that plane, and says Romney grabbed him first.

Evening sounds on Roxbury's Centre Street

Jonas Prang invites us to listen in as he opens the window:

... This quiet is even more pronounced - and valuable - during the warm spring, summer, and autumn evenings. With the windows open one can hear the urban night life: the wind in the trees, the call of the mockingbird, the wings of the bats, the insects, the rustling in the underbrush of the neighborhood raccoon, skunks, the opossum family, and the feral cats. Overlaid on this natural activity is the sound of the arriving cars of one's neighbors and the quiet conversations of the few pedestrians conversing among themselves as they walk home. ...

In Jamaica Plain, they fear the worst for their branch library

BPL officials have yet to publish a list of neighborhood libraries they would shut if they can't come up with enough money for the next fiscal year, but the Jamaica Plain Gazette reports officials in JP worry their library would be top of the list.

Contest for the best shoveled block in Cambridge

Cambridge News Weekly reports Cambridge mail carriers will be the judges in a competition. They don't say what the winning block gets; the losing block presumably is the one with the most complaints filed with the city's snow complaint system.

Did Scott Brown link the crashy nut in Austin with his campaign?

I didn't vote for Brown, doubt I will in two years, but in this video, is he really attempting to legitimize a suicidal murderer or is he just being incredibly clumsy in a live interview? I think he's trying to deflect Faux's attempt to make the loser a martyr, because he says he hopes the guy isn't connected to the sort of real anger he claims got him elected, but that he just completely mangled the thought. But maybe I'm missing something (if so, fire away):

Today's legal tip: Don't wait 20 years to appeal an OUI conviction

The Massachusetts Appeals Court today rejected a request for a new trial from a man who pleaded guilty to drunk driving more than 20 years ago, basically telling him that what little evidence remains from the case shows his rights were not violated.

Robert Haskell did not try to reverse his 1987 guilty plea in Salem District Court until 2007, when he learned the Registry of Motor Vehicles was about to suspend his license for four years because of it. In his request for a new trial, Haskell did not dispute that he pleaded guilty but said his rights were violated because the judge in the case did not ask him if he were pleading guilty voluntarily and free from the influence of drugs or alcohol - a procedure known as a "colloquy."

In its ruling, the Appeals Court ruled that Haskell's current lawyer blew it by submitting affidavits from Haskell and lawyers who practiced law in Salem at the time that "employed identical stock phrases and allegations" to make the argument the judge often failed to ask the questions. Also, the judge in the case - who spent 34 years on the bench - disputed one lawyer's assertion he had appeared before him "hundreds of times" and said he complied fully with the colloquy rules in effect at the time.

Although the plea judge's affidavit did not set forth what specific questions he would routinely ask during a colloquy, he did make explicit reference to complying with Commonwealth v. Duquette, supra, which was decided in 1982, and that he used a sheet of questions prepared by the Chief Justice of the District Court.

Complete ruling.

Countdown timers come to the Reading Line

As of this morning, the new "train arrival system" countdown timers have been activated on the Reading/Haverhill line, at least at the stations between Wakefield and Greenwood.

With the new system in place, most of the annoying "nanny" messages have gone away. Between the 'countdown' timer, which displays about every thirty seconds, there was only one "non-train" message advising folks to renew their monthly passes online. Not sure if this welcome lack of clutter on the boards is a permanent condition or not.

Interesting thing about the countdown, in that it displays "Next Boston Train In :XX" until two minutes before the train arrives, and then goes completely blank from then on. The signs also do NOT display information about outbound trains, at least for now.
