Roxbury? You'd get towed at

Roxbury?
You'd get towed at both locations without a South End sticker.

Just saying...

Usual two-part comment

1) It sucks that people got stabbed.

2) That's the South End; I know this area is subject to debate, but Hammond Street has South End resident parking signs and is 02118.

I'd call it South End, but

I'd call it South End, but it's a close one.

Right at the line - Lower Roxbury

By Ron Newman - 11/22/09 - 8:02 pm

A pre-annexation map shows the Boston/Roxbury city boundary running right down the middle of Hammond Street. Kendall Street, a block north, was in Boston. I often hear people refer to this area as 'Lower Roxbury' since it's down in the flatlands.

A more interesting question to me is: why does so much crime seem to occur in this fairly small district?

Still Lower Roxbury

Most if not all of Hammond St. and surrounding streets are 02120. Approx 3-4 years ago when the city council voted to renew the Urban Renewal plan, the South End line was extended to Melnea Cass. Hence the SE parking stickers. However, most folks who have lived in Lower Roxbury for years or new folks who respect the history and culture of the n'hood still call and considering it Roxbury.

It's Lower Roxbury. Many

It's Lower Roxbury. Many South Enders were (rightly) angry when those Lower Roxbury Streets were given South End parking. Mass. Ave. is the border. What sometimes confuses people is that D-4 covers that part of Lower Roxbury but is often referred to, inaccurately, as "the South End police station." The local media do both neighborhoods a dis-service by not distinguishing. Hammond Street is in Lower Roxbury, not the South End.

It is sad when violence

It is sad when violence happens right down the street, no matter what area of the city.

Nice history lesson Kyle, and I count myself as one not happy with the South End stickers.

The BPD tweet listed the locations as Roxbury, so Adam was in the clear.

Big up to Lower Roxbury; be sure to check out the freshly painted community building on Melnea Cass. Anyone willing to donate some $ to make it a reality?
