Driver hits kid in Mattapan, keeps on going, but doesn't get far

A pre-teen boy was hit by an SUV on Blue Hill Avenue near Fessenden Street around 5:50 p.m. Not long after, police stopped a suspect at Wildwood and Middleton streets, off Morton.

Traffic was diverted from Blue Hill Avenue onto Norfolk Street.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the SUV* driver. May they overcome the $200 fine they will likely get for hitting a kid and speeding off. It's just not fair drivers must suffer so much. Time to cut weekend train service so this never happens again.

The headline implies that the suspect is guilty.

That, like a DUI charge, should automatically and immediately result in license suspension.

It ain't hard to prove and there is NEVER any excuse for it.

A driver hit a kid in Mattapan. Is the kid making it up?
The driver left the scene. Assuming the first fact is true, was there another driver who did stop?
Someone was later stopped.

Now, if Adam (or anyone else) had named names, there would have been an implication that "John Smith" was guilty, when in fact it could be a case of mistaken identity. As it is, most of what Adam wrote is true.

Unlike what Kinopio wrote, the driver will probably get more than a moving violation. Most likely no jail time, but a record (assuming no plea or course) to say the least. That said, innocent until proven otherwise, as you point out.

The driver 100% should have stopped. However I have very nearly hit multiple teenagers driving along that same stretch. They seem to just wander in the streets in the evenings with no regard for crosswalks, and when you are paying attention to a group to your left and a kid approaches the front of your vehicle from the right who assumes you will stop.

This might be a different scenario and the teen was in the crosswalk. However it would be great if there was a cop down there handing out $1 jaywalking fines to all these kids cutting through traffic. No one wants to get his and no one wants to hit anyone, drivers and walkers need to both pay attention.

What's the chances that you and the other drivers are exceeding the 25mph speed limit? If they're going to give jaywalking tickets, might as well give speeding tickets as well.
