Gangs run wild

The Herald reports that "a team of gunmen" followed a limo from a teen's funeral into Roslindale before opening fire, killing one and injuring two yesterday afternoon.

The Herald says the three passengers, aged 17-23, were returning from the funeral of Darrion Carrington, a Dorchester resident gunned down last week at a Dorchester Chinese restaurant only days after getting out of jail on an illegal-weapons charge. The funeral was at St. Michael's Cemetery on the Roslindale/Mattapan line.

After the shooting, the limo driver, who was unhurt, sped off, winding up on Beech Street in front of the Bates Elementary School. The story doesn't say why he drove there or where exactly he'd been taking the men before they were shot. The Globe reports the driver "was not cooperating with investigators."

Both the Bates and the Conley Elementary School on Poplar Street were locked down for at least an hour as police investigated the shooting, which took place at an intersection that, two hours later, would have been crowded with school buses from across Roslindale and West Roxbury.

Meanwhile, David Bernstein at the Phoenix posts figures from the past seven years showing how the age of murder victims in Boston keeps going down: Last year, 35 murder victims (out of 66 total) were under 25; in 2000, only 15 victims were under 25. So far this year, all five Boston murder victims are 23 or younger.
