Rogue Greenpeace canvasser collared

Rogue! The Cambridge Chronicle reports Cambridge Police have arrested the guy they say was going around town soliciting donations for Greenpeace, then keeping the money for himself.

A Greenpeace representative offered some handy tips for differentiating between legitimate Greenpeaceniks and grifters. For starters, Greenpeace no longer goes door to door. Also, the workers always have Greenpeace attire on and have Greenpeace literature at the ready.

This guy has come to my house in Roslindale (Peters Hill neighborhood) regularly for the last five or six years. He drives me nuts -- I'll look forward to seeing him after reading this, though.

He was in my canvassing crew as of 1995. I recognize him. That's how he knew the way to do it.

I like the fact that he's green.

is the guy in Davis Square station who falsely claims to be selling Spare Change News, but actually gives you a Metro or a Boston NOW or nothing at all.

Obviously this guy has problems and needs help. Is Greenpeace going to help him as they would a wounded wombat or a stricken stork?

For starters, Greenpeace no longer goes door to door. Also, the workers [who do not go door to door] always have Greenpeace attire on and have Greenpeace literature at the ready [when they don't come to your door.]

I believe them when they say they don't go door to door. They usually are found soliciting on busy street corners or at entrances to T stations.

Greenpeace is not currently going door to door in Boston, but has begun this endeavor in other cities. I am sure this means they plan to come to Boston soon.

I'll never support any street canvasser for any organization regardless of the cause (Masspirg, Greenpeace, Save the Children, etc). I don't support organizations that do their fundraising by soliciting on the sidewalk (despite the fact that I probably support their mission):

1) There's no way for them to prove that they actually work for whatever organization for which they claim to work. How am I supposed to really know they're more legitimate than the LaRouch moonies or the Gypsy ladies collecting money for the "Indian children"?

2) they annoy the living Hell out of me while I try to mind my own business while walking down the street by trying to snag me with some lame-ass line framed in a way that whatever answer I give is wrong.

Seriously, send me a spam email, you'll have more of a chance of getting money from me.

I asked the same question of the Greenpeace canvasser that recruited me in Boston by MassArt. "How do I know you work for Greenpeace?" They were quick to give me the 800 number from their form and cell phone to call the organization and verify their identity. I called Greenpeace, gave them the person's code and name and they verified that indeed the person was an authorized representative. I have since started received emails with campaign info and ways for me to take action, so truth be told, you can verify if they work for Greenpeace.

He looks like he has not showered in a month.
I bet he still has his Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker on
his 1992 Honda.

Greenpeace does not canvass door to door on the streets of Boston as of yet, but has begun to relaunch it's door to door canvassing efforts in other cities. I am sure that Boston is around the corner. Their representatives are always wearing a Greenpeace shirt or pullover and always have literature with them when they are canvassing.
