Not to pick on Boston firefighters

But, come on:

... At the least, Arroyo's injury claim and subsequent bodybuilding competition came at an awkward time. In mid-April, a federal grand jury issued scores of subpoenas to Boston firefighters as part of a criminal investigation into years of questionable disability injury claims by retired and active firefighters of all ranks. ...

I should be so disabled

By Gareth | Mon, 07/14/2008 - 8:49am

So "totally and permanently disabled." What a leech. I guess the job he's getting paid for keeps him from prancing around in a bikini flexing as much as he would like to. He's treating the FD like his own personal welfare agency.

Guys like this this give public servants a bad name. Go Commish Fraser. Investigate the heck out of him. Then fire him, bring him up on charges, and go after that lying quack's license while you're at it. This isn't just fraud, it's conspiracy. Let them both go lift weights in Walpole.

I Can Understand That They Can't Fight Fires

By bigdumptruck | Mon, 07/14/2008 - 9:31am

But are there no other roles that these guys can do. Can there be cross-over to some other role?

I dunno

I'm not familiar with the specifics of each role at the FD, but from what I gathered from the following part of the article,

"If he can lift weights, work out constantly, and enter bodybuilding contests, then he can inspect a building," Fraser said. Arroyo, a firefighter since 1986, is a member of the Fire Prevention Division.

my assumption is that he didn't even fight fires, just inspected buildings for fire-related danger. Though his apparent clumsiness and falling down stairs may continue, to me walking around buildings looking for fire hazards is nothing that can't be done by a guy with a gimp back.

But I may be wrong about the responsibilities of being in the Fire Prevention Division, so correct me if I'm wrong.

But you're right, Dumptruck, there are plenty of administrative positions he could take. Unfortunately, it seems the union runs the department, not the commish.

This guy reminds me of George Costanza, in the episode when he faked a leg injury to get a subsidized motor cart from his company, Play Now.

Did you see what his "punishment" has been, to date?

Two weeks ago, the Boston Fire Department shifted Arroyo, 46, from injured leave to regular sick leave, which is taxable, after its chief medical officer determined that any injury was not work-related, according to records turned over to the Globe by the city.

Yep. They're going to let him continue stealing from the taxpayers, but he'll now have to (gasp!) pay taxes on his take.

Poor baby.

Man, this department is a

Man, this department is a mess. I feel for the commissioner, he is trying to rein them in.

I really want to be fair

By merlinmurph | Mon, 07/14/2008 - 6:43pm

You know, I really don't want to do the easy thing and jump down this guys throat until I know both sides. Maybe there's something we don't know. I've embarassed myself too many times by mouthing off before hearing both sides. Problem is, he refers all questions to his lawyer and we never hear a thing.

I'll give him a few days before I call him a lowlife, scum-sucking, dirtbag.........

And I'm just waiting for the union rep (Kelly??) to say this is just another smear campaign by the Globe. It's not a smear campaign if it's true.

he didn't show up to work today

By sheenaspleena | Mon, 07/21/2008 - 7:02pm

as ordered to.

He has to be no-show for 14 days before he can get fired though.

I wonder if he'll show up on day 14.

The medical files of three Boston firefighters who claimed career-ending on-the-job injuries disappeared from Boston Fire Department headquarters in recent weeks as federal investigators were pursuing an inquiry into dozens of questionable disability claims, according to two senior public officials.

The possibility that someone removed the files in a bid to hamper the investigation has now spurred a parallel federal investigation of possible theft and attempted obstruction of justice, the officials said.

But if thwarting the federal investigation of disability claims was the motive behind the files' disappearance, the officials added, it was a futile attempt; copies of all the files subpoenaed by federal authorities had already been made and turned over to the FBI.

In response to the disappearance, Boston fire officials have changed the locks on the department's medical office, where the files were kept. They also have preserved 30 days' worth of surveillance video from the headquarters building, according to the officials, who were briefed on the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the incident publicly. Fire officials have also saved sign-in and sign-out data from the headquarters building.

Yes, more stains on the BFD.

Yes, more stains on the BFD.

Assuming someone was deliberately trying to conceal fraudulent disability claims, then they as are stupid as they are criminal.
