The ordinance is so stupid!

I'm sure with the new ordinance, Allston-Brighton is as quiet as Wellesley this weekend, right?

Wrong.

Having said that, landlords should obey the law, shouldn't they? If something such as a fire happened, wouldn't they be in a lot of trouble, both with the city and their insurance company?

I've visited many apartments in the Boston area, and there are many that should be evacuated, gutted or just destroyed outright. No signs of any upkeep of any kind. Fire and health code violations left and right.

Yet somehow the landlords manage to evade any kind of action from the city while they collect astronomical rents on these slums.

Funny that.

It's agreed that the city should definitely crack down...hard, on landlords who do violate the health, safety and fire codes regularly and with impunity.

"there are many that should be evacuated, gutted or just destroyed outright. No signs of any upkeep of any kind. Fire and health code violations left and right.

Yet somehow the landlords manage to evade any kind of action from the city while they collect astronomical rents on these slums."

Unfortunately, however, while not all students are unruly and make messes of the places that they rent, there are enough of them that do so that it presents a problem and makes it difficult for the others.

Tell me about it. This was my apartment searching experience last year:

Me: "I'm looking for a nice, quiet apartment. I don't want to party or hear my neighbors partying."

Realtor: "Oh, well we have plenty of places for professionals and grad students!"

Me: "Oh, I'm not a grad student."

Realtor: "You're 25, right?"

Me: "Yeah, but I had to work for six years after high school before I could start college."

Realtor: "Oooohhhhhh... can't really help you then. The quiet buildings are for grad students and professionals only."

Rinse, repeat.

here:

"Having said that, landlords should obey the law, shouldn't they? If something such as a fire happened, wouldn't they be in a lot of trouble, both with the city and their insurance company?"

lies the rub, unless you're being snarky.
