Wehrmacht takes Stow

We'd just gotten to Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow this afternoon (along with roughly 75% of the rest of greater Boston) and were trudging up one of the hills when, after low flyover by a biplane, World War II re-erupted nearby. It sounded like an ammo dump was blowing up.

Turns out German paratroopers were capturing a nearby airfield. I never realized this sleepy little hamlet was of such strategic importance - but, then, it is the gateway to the entire Nashoba Valley.

Alas, Snoopy was no match for the Luftwaffe and so was forced to flee over a nearby orchard:

Which airfield?

No, not the Stow one, I mean which recreation was it supposed to be?

(Now I'm picturing the troops in gray marching by the old Maine codger sittin' on his front porch, and stopping to ask him directions somewhere.)

Run by this organization

The airfield is a gorgeous piece of property, and thru cooperation with the neighbors, they tend to have two events a year - one on Father's day and this one on Columbus Day weekend. They have a very nice collection of airplanes and cars.

That plane is their PT-17 Stearman which I am dying to get a ride in.

Oh sorry, I just realized you wanted to know about the airfield in the receation - no idea.

I was over at Carver Hills Orchard and not a German in sight. Far less people, too, though the pickings weren't great. Still, we filled a peck off the trees, and considering we didn't have any poles to assist and the amount of hail damage, that's not so bad.

Are we really at the point of reenacting WWII? I mean, I know we do it in video games all the time, but I thought we were content to just reenact the wars fought on American soil that we won. (hence, no War of 1812 reenacting the capture of Maine) Are we going to be reenacting the Gulf Wars by the time I'm an old man?
