Hundreds of state workers to be let go

Both the Globe and the Herald are reporting Gov. Patrick will announce the elimination of 1,000 state jobs and a total of $700 million in budget cuts - which would still leave the state another $800 million to deal with an anticipated $1.5 billion shortfall.

"Margaret Marshall, chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court, and Robert A. Mulligan, the chief justice for administration and management, said in a statement that the judicial branch would cut $30 million from the $642 million it had planned to spend this year. Preliminary plans include a hiring freeze effective this week, cancellation of departmental conferences, and elimination of out-of-state travel. The plan does not include any layoffs."

So all the legislative brothers-in-law and cousins are safe? They were going to spend $30 million dollars on conferences and out-of-state travel? Nice gig.

A hiring freeze is almost

A hiring freeze is almost the same as a layoff (unless you happen to be the people involved, then a layoff is far worse.) From the outside its pretty much the same thing, as everytime someone leaves the spot will not be filled. The thing that sucks about a freeze over a layoff is some departments will retain everybody while others may lose extra people because of increased demand in that sector and retirements. Sucks to be in that department because someone still has to do that job...

Make that $900 million in cuts

By adamg | Wed, 10/15/2008 - 5:33pm

Plus taking $200 million from the state's rainy-day fund.

Some details from the governor's office. No cuts in state aid to cities and towns and to certain safety-net programs, although $350 million in cuts would come from Health and Human Services.

I hope it's all the patronage types that get the axe.
