Whatever Happened to Live and Let Live
All the people of the mindset that gay couples shouldn't be allowed to have civil marriages really deserve their own, separate country.
They should be warned, however, that the other country will have all the good movies and TV shows, and that their own Web sites will look like crap. :)

You forgot to mention that that the anti-gay country will also lose large sums of cash they currently suck out of the new gay friendly "country"

The gay friendly parts of the country also tend to be the ones that drive the countries economy. Gay friendly states like Massachusetts give way more then we get back in taxes every year while non gay friendly states in the south tend to get way more then they put into the tax system.
SOOO the non gay friendly states would lose large sums of cash if this theoritcal break were to happen.

Massachusetts drives the country's economy? Don't get out much, do you? Massachusetts is in a long-term trend downwards, in population and economically. It's the Sun Belt that is growing, and that is now driving the economy. No doubt Masssachusetts feels all that important, but it's actualy dying a slow death.

Last time I checked we still have a net loss in tax revenue compared with southern states. We still have major colleges that everyone in the world seems to want to go to. We still have one of the better housing markets in the country ect. With that in mind we are not alone that unfortunate vote in California not withstanding California is a mostly gay friendly place, so is NY, CT, RI VT ect. Massachusetts is in the club of states driving the countrys economy, not the driver but at least its in the bus.
Ive been hearing about Massachusetts dying this slow death for a very long time now, and were not dead... Whats going on here fella? Our housing market is stronger then the sun belt right now, our job market is still fairly strong considering the circumstances. Even out state seems not so bad when compared to many other states. Seems to me like were stronger then you give us credit for.

You are wrong. MA is the 40th ranked state in terms of federal dollars received compared to federal dollars given. History for each state going back to 1981 is available. MA is on page 21 of the flash document.
I'd love to see your numbers for how dire it is out there. It's not like everyone died or moved to New Mexico between 2005 and now. No doubt you feel that you're right, but it's actually the numbers that count.
Stupid much?
Massachusetts is increasing in population. Always has been, always will be. Since the first US Census in 1790, MA has gained in population in every single census. The state is booming. We also contribute more in proportion to the economy than any of those backwater states (MA is 4th in GDP per capita in the country).
I know it contradicts your Republican dogma to consider that a liberal state could be growing and productive, but denying reality is just a mark of stupidity. The one who needs to get out (of your little box) more is you. Read something; don't just listen to Fox News.
It should be no surprise to find that the more gay-friendly states are the most productive. Where you find ignorance and poverty, you'll find Republicanism. So send us a postcard from Mississippi. You'll feel right at home.
MA Not losing population
MA population has been increasing, just not increasing like other areas of the country.
While Boston has been stagnant since big drops in the mid 20th century, or growing slightly, MA has held ground.
Where MA loses out: our population growth is minimal compared to growth in the southern and western states, and the entire US in general. All-US population increases that are larger than MA population increases nearly automatically mean lost representative seats as there are only 435 reps and even very low population get 1. WA and OR, which have nearly doubled their population since 1990, are going to get their shiny new districts from somewhere ... somewhere like PA, MA, MD ...
Maybe it's the kind of increase
Perhaps it's the kind of increase that makes certain people sure that MA is losing population. MA is losing native-born. MA is gaining immigrants, especially from abroad, and especially Asians and Latin Americans. It's losing principally people who were born here. Perhaps this gives people who circulate exclusively in white Bostonian circles the impression the population is dwindling. It is - of those types. But plenty of other people are happy to take their seats.
Whiteness is not exactly
Whiteness is not exactly dwindling in Boston/Massachusetts after all we are still attracting people from all over the country to our schools. You are right though that the native white population has moved in recent years but generally for three reasons
1) Real estate prices are just so damn high, if your not well educated (and even if you are) its hard to find a place that you can buy.
2) They want a yard. They grew up in very dense areas but come from families that had yards in the past (there used to be many more affordable properties with yards around here) so they are looking for that space.
3) Its cold, I complain about it, my parents complain about it, my grand parents complained about it, and so forth. At some point people begin to wonder what it would be like to live where there was no snow. Some high schools around here have special Florida reunions for older alumni because so many of them live down there. NYC also lends quite a few residents to Florida as well.
Those problems are all things we just cant really fix. You can only build so far out from the city center before people start refusing to commute. Ive always thought that Boston would be so much bigger today if the center of town was only a few miles more to the west. With the center of town being so close to the water you lost out on being able to develope the entire right side of the city. If your in the center you can only go North, South or West. Imagine how much more space we would have if you could also go East for a while without hitting the harbor.
