Homeowner began to yell at perps who seemed "shocked" someone was at home. [...] The homeowners were suppose to have gone away that day but changed plans. It is likely that these individuals knew the house was suppose to be empty.

Perhaps the suspects are otherwise closely connected to the victims. Or perhaps some service that knows when people are out of town is leaking.
