Do you finally see the connection between hackerama antics like pension abuses and bloated payrolls and the absurd cutbacks in services at the Turnpike and MBTA? Hundreds of millions of dollars being wasted at these independent agencies -- and what do they do? Turn off the Zakim lights to save $5,000 a month and plan to reduce evening trolley routes. ... When are the people in this state going to wake up? ...

It's called the Washington Monument Gambit.

Quick term of art that's worth mentioning here is the "Washington Monument Gambit." When government wants more of your money which is always, by the way they first must convince you that they just don't have any more.

To scare taxpayers into believing that there is just no dough to be found anywhere, government threatens to close down the highly popular and visible services the common folk use. On the federal level they close down the parks, like the Washington Monument. "Oh my," we're supposed to think, "they must be running out of money; here, have some more."

I think we are witnessing a tipping point. Tim Bassett, he of the multiple state paychecks and pre-50 "retirement" described in today's Globe, is emblematic. He could prove to be the "Claribel Ventura" of the MA Pension System. Rather than taking advantage of loose welfare regs, he has pillaged the public budgets he was entrusted to protect. He is the Bernie Madoff of the MassPRIM Board.
