iPhone geeks get their 3G S on in Chestnut Hill

Steve Garfield was at the Chestnut Hill Mall at 7:05 this morning to get his new phone. In the report below it only appears like he's in a bunker to keep frenzied hordes of iPhone wannabes from overrunning him and taking his phone - we know Apple fans are not that crude:

My wife just called me from the Chestnut Hill mall a few minutes ago to ask, "Is Apple releasing something today? There's a huge line outside the door."

There's also a line around the block (down Brattle and up Church) in Harvard Square of slackers waiting to buy a new limited-edition Nike sneaker that hits the store on Saturday.

To buy sneakers?

This truly is an amazing world we live in.

...for collectors of overpriced sneakers, gaudy thousand-dollar handbags, etc.

It's called "While Rome Burned."

You'll probably get more people in the door with "Fiddling Nero". I'll only ask 10% of the profits for my brand consulting.

"Fiddling Nero" is a new show on, like, TNT or something. It's in the tradition of "Judging Amy" and "Saving Grace"!

I'm not trying to run a business here.

This sort of consumption-ism is pretty pathetic. I'm all for new toys and technology, but this fetishism of technology and brands is something totally different.

Am I wrong to believe there's no hope for the human race?

Only unemployer bloggers have the time to stand in line to pay $300 for a piece of metal with a fruit on it. If you really want one, pre-order.

Or, wait a week.

I was gonna speculate that maybe some of those "unemployed bloggers" are actually iPhone developers who want to test on the new hardware ASAP.

But if you thought Apple was possessive about fanboy customers, they're downright sadistic against iPhone developers.

Photograph that line of people, and caption it "Subs and masochists."

I used to work in this store. Days like this really made me relate to William Shatner in his SNL "Star Trek Convention" sketch:

"You know, before I sell any more phones there's something I wanted to say. Having received all your tech support problems over the years, and I've spoken to many of you, and some of you have waited... y'know... hundreds of hours to be here, I'd just like to say... GET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it's just a phone! I mean, look at you, look at the way you're dressed! You've turned an enjoyable little job, that I did as a lark for a few years, into a COLOSSAL WASTE OF TIME!"

Etc etc etc.
