Logan-Kennedy International Airport?

State Rep. Lori Ehrlich of Marblehead is proposing adding Kennedy's name to the airport, the Globe reports, in a story that also answers the question: Just who was Logan, anyway?

There's already a "Kennedy Airport" about 200 miles from here.

There's also another Logan International Airport, though it's about 1,863 miles from KBOS.

Not too long ago, I was attempting to buy airline tickets through one of the aggregator sites like Priceline. Instead of putting in "Boston" as starting point, I put "Logan" into the space for "airport".

Tickets came up priced about $600 less than I had expected to pay for two round-trips. I came this close (I'm holding my fingers less than an inch apart) to hitting the "buy" button, when I noticed a flight time of something like 45 minutes, rather than the 5 hours I would have expected. I looked more closely at the itinerary.

Good thing I checked. I would have had to have caught a flight to Billings, Montana, to catch the amazing bargain flights I thought I had found.

Ted Kennedy nearly died in a plane crash, JFK Junior died in a plane crash, his sister Kathleen Kennedy and brother Joe died in a plane crashes ...

Also the airport is noisy and people, especially poor people, complain about it daily. Ted Kennedy would not want his name on that.

Yep. The only thing more tacky would be naming a bridge to Chappaquiddick Island after him.

First of all, the official name of the Airport is the General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport. It's "official" name in the "industry" is "Boston-Logan International Airport". This matters for a lot of reasons that I will not bore you with.

Second, I cannot decide what is more offensive: (1) that a legislator can propose a bill like this as the Commonwealth is sitting at half-strength in the U.S. Senate and the General Court does not seem to be in a rush to correct that before Congress reconvenes; or (2) that the proposed name would cause havoc and confusion for a good long while with JFK, particularly on online travel sites. Not everyone knows or uses airport codes.

However, if the representative thinks that naming something after the late Senator would be a way to honor his service to our Commonwealth, why don't we rename something that needs attention, affection and help after him? Do I hear the Senator Kennedy Memorial Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority? Presumably the Lady from Marblehead would not allow something named after the late Senator to fall into miserable disrepair? Isn't that right, Representative Ehrlich?

Does anybody get confused by silly Manchester-Boston Airport?

You ride the Teddy.

The next generation would assume that T always meant Teddy.

I don't know that he would have wanted his name to be used that way, though.

The Ted Williams Tunnel, of course, or "The Ted".

Why don't we just change the name of the place where most of the Kennedys lived? I mean, who was this "Cod" guy, anyway? Make it Cape Kennedy.

Oh, yeah, that's right. There was that place down south where they shot all those astronauts into space. Okay, let's name a defunct mens clothing store after him.

It would harken back to those times in the 80's when ridding Teddy was more common in DC.

You don't rename something that's already named for someone just because someone more recent comes along and is also famous. Somerville's Dilboy Field was going to be renamed after the recent renovations, but the powers-that-be wised up and scratched that idea.

Hey, why not go all out and propose naming Fenway Park Kennedy Field?!
