The highest-resolution transparent LED display in the world, right here in the Hub

Take that, WGBH! The Carpenters Center reports workers today installed the giant LED screen thingee on the side of the New England Regional Council of Carpenters HQ now rapidly nearing completion off the Expressway in Dorchester:

... Although it is 50% transparent, it is capable of displaying a 400 x 600 pixel image which is approximately a 1 megapixel photo. The display can handle millions of colors.

The display will be the highest-resolution transparent LED display in the world and will be seen by over 280,000 viewers per day. There are only one or two transparent LED installations in the US which are approximately half the resolution of this display and 1/3 the potential brightness - making this sign clearly visible in the middle of the day. ...

With photos of the behemoth screen.

I probably won't be able to get to sleep now because I'll have that stupid song in my brain.

Adam, it could be worse.

Adam, it could be worse. Someone could have remarked that the Carpenters feel on top of the world...

this thing is blocked by a billboard located on the property next door as well as the sign for exit 15 on the south side of the highway. You can't see it until you're almost next to it. I can see a few accidents happening here as people stop to read it.

If people are that

If people are that distracted by an advertisement, then they'll be a problem on the road regardless.

They might not cause a crash right there without it, but they will somewhere, sometime.

Math is Hard

Ummmm... Isn't a 400x600 pixel image equivalent to 0.24 megapixels? That's around a quarter of a megapixel, not "approximately a 1 megapixel photo."

Yeah, math is hard. But I wouldn't hire a carpenter who's measurements are off by a factor of four.

And I wouldn't hire a writer

Correction

By NERCC Web (not verified) | Wed, 10/14/2009 - 11:36am

A correction has been made to the Carpenters Center site. A 640 x 480 image is NOT equal to a 1 megapixel image. Good catch Michael Pahre! That was an error made by a vendor helping us with the sign. Digital world though it may be, Carpenters still don’t directly deal much in megapixels.

Bravo to Karen for the modified song lyrics!

Impressive

Looking forward to seeing it.
