It's official: I've become my parents

I just told my daughter: "OK, I never thought I'd have to say this to you but: If everybody else threw themsleves off a cliff, would you?"

To which she grudgingly admitted "No," before starting in again on why it's just not fair she has to wear a helmet if she wants to ride her bike: "Nobody else does!"

The law that says if she is under the age of 16 she has to wear a helmet.

Or my sister's favorite fall back. 'bike, what bike'

I think you turned into MY parents, too

Although, to be fair, my mother always put a local spin on it and asked, "If everyone were jumping off the Tobin Bridge..."

Empire State

Um, yeah, my parents never actually used the cliff analogy - they would go "If everybody jumped off the Empire State Building ..." but I kinda figured my Rozzie rat of a daughter was not in a mood for a verbal trip back to the old neighborhood.

How old is she?

If she is 5th grade or older ---- a great book that will quietly bring home the importance of both wearing a bike helmet and listening to your parents is "Elsewhere" by Gabrielle Zevin.
