The Essex Base Ball Club in Danvers plays serious old-school baseball - as in using the rules that were in effect in 1861, which include:

Underhand pitching, a ball bounced once and caught is an out, and no gloves allowed!

Uniforms to match, natch, and yes, of course they're in a league.

No, not better than Shaughnessy. Exactly like Shaughnessy. At Boston Sports Media Watch, Bruce Allen is running a Shaughnessy write-alike contest:

... Next week, the New York Mets come into town, and of course with them will be Pedro Martinez. We know Shaughnessy will write a column about the return of Pedro. You probably have a good idea what it is going to read like.

So write it.

Watching the Sox blow another game in Minnesota in person.

On Basegirl, Kristen is not happy:

... Maybe what Clement needs is for someone to whip out one of those Men In Black memory eraser thingies after each of his starts and eradicate his memories of the game. Maybe he'll pitch better if he thinks every game is his first. If he's got no record to go on. ...

And that's one of her kinder comments.

While listening to tonight's Sox beating, Spatch's post on Boston fans praying for rain came to mind. Oh, darn, Minnesota never has rainouts.

Beth comes to Terry Francona's defense:

... Are we really going to have such a skewed sense of entitlement that we'll be calling for Francona's head by the end of this season, despite his overall track record with this team so far, just because someone's blood's gotta flow to make us feel better about a less than stellar squad this time around? ...

Bruce Allen interviews Globe Sox reporter Chris Snow, leaving to become the Theo Epstein of the Minnesota Wild.

Great, great game. Until the 12th.

On BunkoSquad, Michael gently suggests where Tavarez should go.

On Cursed to First, Beth writes she feels like she just watched a milestone game - although it remains to be seen which way it points.

The Couch Potato: I stayed up past my bedtime for this?!

Dear NESN,

When the Red Sox are losing 13-6, don't you think you could find another house ad to run besides the one with that grinning woman asking "What's not to love about this pitching staff?"

Because right about now, there are a couple of things we could mention.

Beth rounds up all the blog comments she could find on Papelbon after last night's game:

... Today the flurry of enthusiasm over Papelbon's performance last night is almost as wonderful as the performance itself. ...

On Irish Elk, Mark figures 6/6/06 is a good day to recall Jimmie Foxx, a.k.a. the Beast (whose number was actually 3):

... Jimmie Foxx is not remembered as widely as he perhaps ought to be today, though Tom Hanks' Jimmy Dugan character in A League of Our Own is said to have been loosely based on him. ...

Red Sox masochists will take Beth's poll on the worst thing about last night's game (unfortunately, she does not list "everything" as an option).

Red: We took it Ned Beatty-style, watching any last remaining droplets of pride sink into the grass or evaporate into thin air.

D. Sands remembers the day he got his first mitt at the Codman Square Health Center - and the man - John Cooper - who introduced him to the game:

Don't you DARE suggest that Meredith's daughter is one of those johnny-come-lately Sox fans just because she loves her pink Sox cap.
