NorthEndWaterfront.com reports a company that runs a Ferris wheel in Montreal wants to build a 200-foot-tall Ferris Wheel on Long Wharf - along with a liquor-serving cafe.

Building new pilings for the Ferris wheel at the end of the wharf would, the company hopes, let it avoid the never-ending battle over whether any private concern could be built at the tip of the existing wharf.

Proposed Ferris wheel at the Charlestown Navy Yard

The BPDA is looking for ways to spruce up the Charlestown Navy Yard and turn it into a destination for people who have already seen Old Ironsides - with more art, history and use of the water. Earlier this week, the agency released copies of presentations from several design firms with ideas on how to "activate" both the water's edge and the three-mile Harborwalk section that runs through the Navy Yard. The Coast Guard reports a Quincy Police crew found a barge that capsized Sunday morning just north of one of the main shipping channels into Boston Harbor, about two miles south of Nahant, near the entrance to the harbor. Read more.

A researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute reports Boston Harbor is now so clean that he hasn't found any flounders with liver tumors there since 2004. Back in the bad old days when raw sewage routinely flowed into the harbor, flounders would show up with liver tumors.

Boston Police alert us that between 8:45 a.m. and 11 a.m. both tomorrow and Saturday, the Navy will have cannons blasting and fighter jets zooming over the Reserved Channel to help celebrate the formal commissioning of the USS Thomas Hudner.

The ship is named after Fall River native Thomas Hudner, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for crash landing his fighter jet in Korea in 1950 in an attempt to save another pilot who had been shot down by the Chinese.

Boston Harbor Hotel managers said today they will no longer allow members of the public onto a dock on which it offers live musical performances after an August incident in which a couple fell off the dock into the briny shallow - ironically while dancing to the theme song from the movie "Footloose."
