The recent issues at BLS being reported by the media are indicators of a larger problem within the City of Boston, and it's time for constituents of Boston's legislators and officials to hold those truly responsible accountable for their inaction.

The Herald reports longtime political fixer Michael Goldman is now "troubleshooting the media" for the mayor when they cover the ongoing Boston Latin School issue. City Hall and the Bolling Building both insist, however, that Goldman has absolutely no access to confidential records, so we guess we'll just need to keep speculating on who might have leaked confidential student disciplinary information to the Globe on Friday.

BPS says it will appoint an interim headmaster for Boston Latin School next week as officials begin what they say is a national effort to find a replacement for Lynne Mooney Teta, who resigned this week.

Meanwhile, BPS has yet to say publicly what process it will use to replace Nicole Gittens, who is resigning as headmaster at the O'Bryant School.

Some 100 Boston Latin School parents and alumni - and some students - rallied on the steps of the school this morning to show their support for Headmaster Lynne Mooney Teta and Assistant Headmaster Malcolm Flynn - and to demand a seat at the table for discussions on selecting the next headmaster at the exam school. Peter Kadzis basically livetweeted an angry meeting of Mayor Walsh, Superintendent Tommy Chang and BLS teachers. Teachers demanded Walsh and Chang refuse resignations from Headmaster Lynne Mooney Teta and Assistant Headmaster Malcolm Flynn, Walsh got mad, Chang told teachers not to pull that sort of thing in front of the media but they did anyway.

Gittens

Nicole Gittens, headmaster at the O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, is leaving Boston to become deputy superintendent of teaching and learning in neighboring Brookline, Brookline Schools announced today.

Gittens became O'Bryant headmaster in 2014; her last day is June. 30.

Before the O'Bryant, she was headmaster at the Urban Science Academy.

Malcolm Flynn, an assistant headmaster at Boston Latin School, today submitted his resignation, one day after Headmaster Lynne Mooney Teta resigned.

BLS has, or had, five assistant headmasters.

Boston School Police report arresting a 16-year-old Brighton High School student they say came to school with a loaded handgun yesterday morning.

Police say the teen had a loaded Bryco Arms Jennings J-22 handgun in his pants pocket when pat frisked around 8:50 a.m. Read more.

BPS officials promised students at the Sumner School in Roslindale today that their arson-ravaged playground would be rebuilt in time for the opening of school in September.

At a ceremony at which kids thanked the firefighters of Ladder 16 and Engine 53 in Roslindale for keeping the fire from spreading, officials praised the kids for their reaction to the fire - they raised $277.45 in a lemon-aid sale - and parents and local businesses, who have so far kicked in more than $60,000. Sunny Pai, director of Diploma Plus at Charlestown High School, this week won the Nellie Mae Education Foundation’s Lawrence W. O’Toole Award - which means a $100,000 grant to the school. Read more.

Drawings of Boston Latin School seniors

Boston Latin School students walked into school today to find hallways lined with charcoal drawings of all 410 or so graduating seniors on their last full day of school. Philip Sossou of Roslindale started working on the drawings in February.

City Councilors want Boston to join the ranks of communities pushing back high-school start times to give sleep-deprived students a better jump on the day.

The council unanimously approved holding a hearing on the idea of starting high school as late as 8:30 a.m. Nearly half the city's high schools currently start at 7:20 or 7:30 a.m., councilors said. Read more.

For the second time this year, BPS students walked out of class for a protest against program cuts.

Fewer people joined this protest, but there were more than enough people to fill the City Council chambers during a regularly scheduled hearing on the budget for BPS's new "social emotional learning and wellness" program. Read more.

The Herald reports on a possible BPS student walkout tomorrow afternoon that will culminate with a 2 p.m. City Hall hearing on the school budget led by Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury), chairman of the City Council's Education Committee. Mayor Walsh is not amused.

Boston Public Schools will hold an "information session" Monday evening about the issue of lead in school water fountains.

The meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m. in the School Committee chambers at the Bolling Building, 2300 Washington St. in Roxbury, will be open to the media. Read more.
