North End to get more low-end, high-end dining

The Boston Licensing Board today approved a new wrap and sub shop on Salem Street and an expansion of Bricco on Hanover Street.

At a hearing yesterday, a lawyer for Paulie's, 65 Salem St., said the neighborhood needed a low-priced take-out place for its growing numbers of young families and students who want something quick to eat without having to pay for a full meal at a place like Bricco. Owner Paul Barker is a member of the local Pace family. Although Paulie's will have 14 tables, Barker will run it mainly as a take-out place - there will be no table service.

At a separate hearing yesterday, a lawyer for Bricco, 241 Hanover St., said the high-end restaurant has become so popular that owner Frank DePasquale bought the building it's in so he could expand into what is now an insurance office and increase its seating capacity from 120 to 167.

The proposed expansion was mildly opposed by the North End Waterfront Residents Association, which did not like the idea of more people pouring onto the streets of the North End after the restaurant closes at 2 a.m. The Zoning Board of Appeals had approved the expansion on Tuesday.

Always love to try new sub shops. Please include hot pastrami. BTW- anyone know where you can get a decent hot pastrami downtown/North End?

Not perfect, but decent pastrami. They're the best I've found in this area. Their corned beef is pretty good, too.

Thanks, hot pastrami is one of those things I am always hesitant to order if I don't know in advance if they do it "right"- because if they don't - it can be awful (philly cheese steaks are the same way).

The New Chardon Cafe over by the Brooke Courthouse does a good hot pastrami.

The historic Eire Pub, 795 Adams Street Dorchester has a great pastrami sandwich, piled high, for $4.95. The hot (Chinese?) mustard adds a real kick. One sandwich makes a meal and even if starving, it's a challenge to finish two. I believe it's still cash only and sandwiches are only served til 3 pm. Worth the trip!

the best pastrami is always at places that close shortly after the lunch hour. I've been on a quest for a place that makes a reliable great hot pastrami sandwich since "The Sandwich shop" owned by a Greek family closed at the end of the BC- B-line a long time ago. I'll keep it mind. Thanks.

BTW:

For anyone interested: Pasta Beach- where Rudi's used to be in the Harbor Hotel building- has been open for a little over a month now. I wasn't happy about this place opening because well- pasta- I'm drowning in it in this part of town- but I gave them a try (a couple tries actually) and my verdict: Good.

Nice atmosphere- a full bar (for those that drink) and a diner type counter with cushioned stools- and regular tables. The menu is affordable as well with the most expensive I saw being 22 bucks- (most were between 12-20). Service is very friendly (Tommy the waiter is a cut-up).

The bolognese at about 14 bucks is very good.
