At the sound of the tone, your ass will be so busted

Here's an interesting tale of how a guy waiting for the Red Line at Park Street got his iPad back after it was snatched out of his hands (while composing e-mail), thanks to a local company that provides IT management services:

Once the officers were in the area, McGowan enabled the iPad’s location alert. The alarm wasn’t loud enough to draw the attention of the officers, but it did make the perpetrator pull the device out of his backpack, which the officers then witnessed and swiftly moved in to retrieve the device.

To prove that the iPad was in fact the stolen property of his client, McGowan sent a message to the device that said "This iPad is stolen property." The officers felt this was sufficient enough evidence and they made sure to get the iPad safely back to its owner.

This is a FREE service through the otherwise-useless MobileMe, and everyone who has an iPhone or iPad should enable it today! It also has the capability to view the location of your device on a map (by you only, not everyone).

I thought MobileMe had an annual subscription fee.

It still does, but you can create a free account and use the "Find my iPhone" service.

I tried to set up the MobileMe account and it still says I have to pay, if I don't have an iPhone 4.

An iPhone 4 or an iPad will let you set it up for free; you can then use the free account with other devices as well. If you only have older devices, you still have to pay for MobileMe (or find someone with a qualifying device who'll let you borrow it for long enough to activate the account).

all the free account does is give you "Find my iPhone" or "Find my iPad", so... the only way to access signing up for it is through those devices

It is free as of today, was in Steve's Keynote Speech a few weeks ago.

Run far away from Mobile Me. Friend of mine works at the Apple Store, and complains all the time about MobileMe and how horrible it is. Syncing always is an issue.

Just an FYI.

Funny you mention that... a friend of mine had the exact same complaint about mobileme, that the syncing "didn't work" and screwed up their calendars and bookmarks.

I'm glad it helps people recover their stolen devices though.

These things ought to have a loop of some sort that you can affix a cord to so you can wrap it around your hand (etc.) and make it harder to 'lift'. Most $29 (with 2-yr service agreement) cell phones have it.

just don't use the stupid thing in plain sight of others when standing on a crowded subway platform or train to begin with.

Yes, it's unfortunate that these type of crimes are occuring. However, when I see most people using tablets and smartphones on the T, part of me says these folks should just put a "Please Rob Me" sign on their backs.

Considering the on-time performance of the T lately, some people use them to catch up on work while they can't be at work due to T fail.

The real problem is that the people using these "zone out". The better answer is to 1) pay attention and 2) use a leash and 3) stop blaming the victims.
