State Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez reports Boston and Transit Police will install the cameras because of 12 assaults in the area around the station this summer.
This is nice and everything but as studies have shown over and over the cameras will not reduce the overall amount of violence around Jackson Square T.
It may only help catch the people, that is if they are not wearing a mask.
Neighborhood policing and community involvement is a much better solution.
London's CCTV efforts have proven that the only thing that cameras do is make criminals better at hiding. It hasn't even done that here: people still jump turnstiles and such, in full view of the cameras, because the pictures are so bad you couldn't possibly prove it was someone or identify them.
This will do nothing to address the problem of Bromley-Heath wannabe thugs hiding behind the fence of mural paintings and throwing (or shooting) things at passing cyclists on the southwest corridor path.
Hilarious comment! I'm shocked by your disregard for civility, but hey that's why they call yours "shock humor". You have a rapier sense of wit--glad to see you don't save your best stuff for your calls into Howard Stern.
But my opinion is that cameras can do wonders in some areas, and nothing in others. And they aren't going to stop crime in general.
And those MBTA cameras have done wonders for law enforcement. Sure, they aren't going to follow up on turnstile hoppers, but many good crimes have been solved because of those cameras.
why not assign an officer to the station? As far as cameras all the thugs take pictures of their crimes and post them on you tube so they are not scared of cameras.

They do provide..
Evidence if an attack goes to court though, it may not always be definitive but it is one more piece of evidence to help in difficult to prove cases.
no, it's not.

There have been other studies as well.
Some of them show the opposite.

How about tearing down the projects there? That might help with the crime a bit...
