Author not satisfied with Globe correction over Magical Negro claim

The Herald, natch, loves it some schadenfreude over a spat between Dennis Lehane and the Globe over a review - which the Globe corrected - that originally took Lehane to task for portraying a character in a new book as a magical Negro, when, in fact, the character is white.

Really, Eugenia? There's a character who is poor, speaks in dialect, and is involved in crime, so you just assumed he was black?

Or did Magical Cracker just sound too Nabisco?

I'm so glad the Inside Track picked up on this because the reviewer in the Herald Literary Suppliment somehow missed this as well.

The woman used to write for the Phoenix. She should have stuck to editing the restaurant listings.

And of course our intrepid cub reporter turned to Twitter to express her sorrow over such a stupid mistake.

"I'm super unnerved right now, having received my very first book review-related hate mail a few seconds ago."

OMFG! Rilly? Maybe she was on acid when she wrote the review. It seems to really bring out the creativity amongst Phoenix writers.

dude, we get it, chris farone banged your sister. how many freakin' times can you repeat the same tired old line. Whatever you're on must keep the creativity in.

My sister only bangs guys who bathe and do not smell like a screen that's been left in the pipe for years. Obviously what you're on keeps the punctuation and grammar out.

If only some people would be less tight assed, the world would be a much more pleasant place for everyone.

This whole story is amusing on multiple levels.

'Cracker' is an deliberately insulting southern slur aimed at whites, especially socioeconomically deprived southern whites.

'Negro' is simply the Spanish word for black.

Nobody could have predicted that getting rid of staff writers and hiring freelancers with minimal editorial oversight would result in this sort of embarrassment.

because the full-timers were (are) above reproach.

So the Herald has done something wrong? And are we supposed to give the Globe a gold star on the forehead for making a correction? Lehane obviously doesn't think so.

Maybe you wouldn't be so interested in the Herald's schadenfreude if you didn't just put up a petty 'gotcha' post about reusing a graphic a few days ago. The story is about the Globe, not the Herald. The Herald didn't publish a smear of a major writer - the Globe did.
