Seat might be opening up on the School Committee

Updated to reflect the fact that while O'Neill's term expires, he hasn't indicated that he wants to retire from the School Committee.

Boston School Committee member Michael O'Neill's term expires in January and the mayor is looking for people who might want to fill his seat - although O'Neill could also reapply for the position.

Boston School Committee members are appointed to serve four-year staggered terms. When vacancies exist, the Mayor selects members from a list of candidates recommended by a Citizens Nominating Panel composed of parents, teachers, principals, and representatives of the business and higher education communities. Under the state legislation that established the appointed School Committee, "the Mayor shall strive to appoint individuals who reflect the racial, ethnic and socioeconomic diversity of the city."

People interested in a possible seat on the School Committee should apply by Nov. 19. Apparently, finding an application to begin with is part of the process. The city says a copy is available at www.cityofboston.gov and www.bostonpublicschools.org - but it isn't, at least not on the home pages. So cheat and download a copy.

Too bad Claudio 'Parking Space Rage' Martinez and Rev Groover, Church of Financial Irresponsibility aren't leaving, but I suspect they're in it for the long haul, er... I mean children. They're in it for the future of the children and not at all to consolidate their power as unelected 'community leaders' who serve their own special interests.

You're informed and have a vested interest in the BPS. Plus, you know how to cheat the system. Sounds like a perfect candidate to me.

Applications for the position were not where they were supposed to be but those bastids at City Hall can't keep him down so he found one and he recommended that we

cheat and download a copy.

I didn't mean that Adam's a cheat in the Diane Wilkerson sense. I meant it to be taken as "the man" can't keep him down. He'll find a way to get things done.

I think my sarcasm is a bit off today. My three year old nephew's in the ER because he had a seizure this morning.

I get what you were saying. Perhaps 'navigate' or 'negotiate' would work better than 'cheat', in the sense of having an aptitude for finding his way through noise/chaff to interesting/useful pieces of news/information.

(In the circles I travel in, the verb 'hack' would have similar connotations, and additionally suggest a sense of humor and even directed purpose (both of which I think Adam has). But the population in general currently views that word too ambivalently.)

I also think someone like Adam would be a great addition to the board.

p.s. my prayers and best wishes for the full and rapid recovery of your nephew.

Shet like what my nephew's going through makes me realize how much I love this city. That little dude's having an MRI at what could be the best pediatric hospital in the world, Children's Hospital. He has two neurologists working as a team with my sister and nephew and some great nurses helping take care of all of them.

I do my fair share of bitching about this city but when push comes to shove, it's a pretty good place to be.

Back on topic: I would like to see Adam be on the school committee because I'm fairly sure that I'm ditching this corporate America thing to go back to school so I can be a high school Math teacher in a "high needs" area of Boston. Of course, I'd have to have Adam erase all my posts here otherwise they won't let me anywhere near those kids.

Misunderstood the context. I should always check for irony first.

Sorry I'm so cynical but this is how they'll fill this post:

1) Menino (or one of his minions) will find the person they want and tell them to fill out an application.
2) Then they'll pick that person
3) tell everyone else thanks for participating in our nationwide search for a school board member but never mind.

Actually -they'll probably eliminate step three as a "cost savings measure".

Nobody with any backbone (like Adam) will be allowed near this position.
