Upscale dining comes to an end in Hyde Park

Boston Restaurant Talk reports Townsend's on Fairmount Avenue has ceased to be.

Meanwhile, Rincon Caribeno down the block goes before the Boston Licensing Board on Wednesday for permission to serve liquor with meals. Also scheduled for Wednesday: A hearing on a proposed liquor store at 59 Fairmount, to be called Fairmount Wine and Spirits. The store would be sort of kitty-corner from the failed Albert Winestein.

This is unfortunate. Hyde Park is in need of better shopping and dining options.

Townsend's and the former coffee shop in the same building both failed. I hate to think it's because better businesses can's survive in Hyde Park. I also think most of the condos upstairs have failed to sell.

It was difficult location. Narrow, congested street, parking difficult to find. Plus Hyde Park is a far corner of the city. There's also no focus to the retail strip. I used to live in Hyde Park, and always found myself leaving to go elsewhere for what I wanted.
