The best bagels are really dense, unlike Roslindale Square, which loses bagel shop to Framingham

Roslindale Square resident Adam Kessel reports Brooklyn Water Bagels considered Roslindale Square for a new outlet but opted to open in Framingham instead because the area just doesn't have enough foot traffic to support one of its shops.

Retail chains considering urban areas such as Roslindale Village tend to want heavy foot traffic - unlike in suburbs such as Framingham, where they rely more on car traffic, he says.

He says the condos under construction on Robert Street and the proposed Substation housing units are examples of projects that could one day give the square enough people to support the sort of bagel place that South Boston is getting.

It's a chain and all, but the square is seriously lacking in some kind coffee type option. You'd think with the commuter rail station and numerous bus lines picking up there someone would jump at the opportunity.

a new place just opened up closer to Forest Hills, not too far from the square, and it seems to have quality coffee and breakfast sandwiches, it is called Simpli Cafe on Washington Street

O well , maybe Katz will like to expand to the village , from Chelsea by the sea, now that a need for bagels has been identified. Good stuff , ! Is there such thing as a venture bagel capitalist ?

But his business model proved to be full of holes (you may now hit the button).

Bruegger's in West Roxbury has sort of become my second office thanks to its pumpernickel bagels, but I have to admit I hate that parking lot - it's where all the people who failed their road tests 10 or 11 times or who forgot to put in their contact lenses park. Also, they are not New York bagels. Cafe Fresh Bagel in Dedham Square has those, but who wants to go all the way into Dedham? Plus, it's not really set up as a coffee-shop kind of place.

That is whats sinking the model , the holes ! Make the bagel solid , punch out the hole , and make bagaleens , or bagelettes , or bagleito, .........

... said my friend, holding up a Bruegger's bagel. "Soft, flabby, goyische bread in the shape of a bagel. What is it called?"

That parking lot was designed by masochists for masochists, although I've never seen Tom Lehrer there.

And Roslindale just doesn't have these things to support a bagel shop like the one Mr. Kessel set up.

That's my opinion anyway.

To clarify, I didn't set up any bagel shop. I'm just a guy who lives in Roslindale. We tried Brooklyn Water Bagels in Delray Beach and liked them, tried to get them to come to Rozzie. There was some interest but the company ended up locating in Framingham instead.

Some reaction via Twitter to Kessel's news:

Hank Layfield:

We have good density in Rozzie Square area; how do we concince the bagel gods that we are a perfect location?

Ami Chitwood:

Framingham? Bagels should come to Rozzie - we heart bagels. #pleasepleaseplease

Gradon Tripp:

I think, with a little time & a lot of work, Belgrade could become a retail win, connecting the Square & WRox.

Jen Langley:

Totally agree. There’s the empty florist spot at Walworth. I dream about a coffee shop.

Adam Kessel:

I've been working on coffee too. Encourage Jared @SipCafe to expand here. He might actually do it. Another good coffee shop location would be old Minerva's Owl spot; has hidden open courtyard in back

I live in the square and shop in the stores regularly. I can definitely attest to the likelihood of there being more foot traffic in Roslindale Square if there were more things in Roslindale Square to justify said traffic. Fornax isn't exactly empty most of the time.

A really valuable contribution to the area would be a coffee shop that makes coffee that humans could actually drink.

Framingham has had a thing for bagels for decades.

It once even had a bagel war - Moe Eagerman, the man who gave the world cinnamon-raisin bagels, opened an outlet near Temple Street with the express purpose of putting Bagels, Bagels, Bagels and More (which was at Temple and Rte. 9) out of business. I forget what that shop had done to make Eagerman (who had his original shop in Brookline and one in Natick) mad (except it probably wasn't much - Eagerman seemed to get mad easily), but the two battled it out for months until Eagerman finally realized opening a shop away from the main road, where nobody could even see it, was only going to put him way into debt, and he shut down.

I concur. Delicious and conveniently located on Rt. 30. Sorry Rozzie! :-)

We have a McDonald's that just closed last week, which would be a perfect location for your bagel shop. Lots and lots of foot traffic here.

Also, Somerville loves things that are called "Brooklyn", based on the instant success of Brooklyn Boulders a mile away.

Their Store Locator is totally broken -- I get no results for either "New York, NY" or "Brooklyn, NY".

I think they just get their water from Brooklyn. I'm from NJ originally and I can attest that the bagels here do not even hold a candle to NJNY bagels. I've always heard it was the water. I'd love them in Davis though. Bacon egg and cheese on everything, every weekend morning please!

Their shtick is a water-filtration system which is supposed to mimic New York water.

My in-laws live near the original one in Delray Beach, Florida, and this Brooklyn boy will attest that their bagels are very good, but the key is to eat them shortly after coming out of the oven.

I wanted to try that, but at 5'10", I couldn't fit in my oven. Does anyone have a larger oven I could use?

In Brookline Village but I hear good things. And honestly, if Cutty's said "hey--this deep-fried shoe is really, really delicious," I'd probably believe them. And it probably would be.

Rozzie needs a deep-fried shoe spot!
