...the bulbs are. Bulbs that are supposed to be used for functional, useful purposes - not spewing light pollution and burning energy for the sake of a religious icon.

This is so stupid...what a waste of energy and CO2 emissions.

Are you against the Citgo sign? Movie theater marquees? Lighted billboards? There's an awful lot of "non-functional" lighting being used out there and I'd rather it at least utilize energy efficient bulbs since it's obviously not going away.

Puritans can't help themselves - they have to be miserable.

Of FFS. Go fuck yourself.

This is a local icon that happens to mean a great deal to some folks. They are supporting it with their own funds, and I THINK THAT THIS WAS A NICE AND SWEET STORY.

This hipster philosopher shit works both ways: If you don't like it, then don't look at it.

What do you mean by hipster philosophy. By the way, it's great the cross is back and lit. It's always been part of Eastie iconography...

There are plenty of people who see a big lit cross as an abuse of the symbol. Jesus did not walk the world to shine a light up a person's nose. To continue the metaphor he walked the Earth to supposedly bring spiritual light to a spiritually dark world.

We could use another Jesus who could bring this spiritual light to folks who are so caught up in anger and resentment that they resort to violent language.

I actually enjoy seeing the cross. To me it is local color. I am not a Trinitarian Christian and wonder about the validity of a cross as a proper representation of the ideals of Christianity. But I can appreciate the quality of assurance and security that it offers others.

I also enjoyed seeing the Star of David erected by the fellow in JP who praised God by projecting enough light to reach the heavens during the Saturnalia. Even though he called himself Christian he at least offered some representation of Jewish tradition.

What I wonder is what does God think about creating so much light at night that cities are now virtual runways for angels landing on the Earth?

It is simply converted to other forms. If you're going to spew off things you call stupid...well, look up Forest Gump.

an ostensibly feel good story of a guy taking the initiative to restore a regional landmark, at no public expense, and someone has to gripe about it. Should we turn out the lights on the Zakim too? But that's non-religious right? So let's get rid of the friggin tree and menorah at "holiday" time - huge waste of energy. And let's not even start in about the staggering waste of millions of dollars that the summertime display of jingoism and explosive masturbation over the Charles...

to quote a UHub regular, "Cripes."
Only in this case to 'heck' with it,... Christ.

I am against extra light pollution just as much as the next guy but we have to keep it in context. LED bulbs are more directional and depending on the exact type are most likely producing much less light pollution upward than the previous bulbs. If you want it lit anyway LED's make the most sense all around and I say good on this guy to get NStar to give anything! Well done.

There is no such thing as a LEED light; I think they mean these bulbs use light-emitting diode, or LED, technology. More crack reporting by the Times-Free Press...

And yes, it's a legitimate certification - even for a lighted cross on a hillside.

A project can be LEED certified but a product cannot be. This is clearly an LED typo.

This has been lit for nearly a month now, since Pope Francis was appointed, if not sooner. I can understand this flying under Adam's radar, but the goddamn *EASTIE* Times just noticed?

You're expecting timliness fromt he East Boston Times? Have you ever read that thing? They haven't even noticed yet that WW2 is over. And lets not even mention the Sun Transcript. They think Mussolini is still running Italy.

They have a similar cross that is lit up along route 9 in Framingham. I'm surprised that Don Orion home. With all the money and donated money they have, are not willing to put up the money to keep the lights on the cross or even maintain it.. what a disgrace!!!
