One Brookline cabbie's pedestrian attempt at parking

Masshole cabbie

Turlach MacDonagh spotted this Town Taxi cab on Beacon Street the other day:

Masshole parking for taxis 101. I didn't realize that you could use crosswalks for parking too! What great dual use. The killer is there was 3 free legit spots behind me. And if you are wondering if the driver was in the car, nope.

I used to manage the store see on that corner. This is not the first time I've seen a cab in that location. They'd stop there to come in for a coffee or a sandwich and yes, sometimes for a beer.

It's a very entertaining section of Boston. Between the end of Summit (seen in this pictures) the cross-overs across the MBTA tracks, and the very wide intersection across Beacon St, add in a high than normal population of elderly living in the area, and there was no end to the heart-stopping traffic entertainment!

That Summit-outbound block is the worst part of the otherwise excellent revamp of Beacon St. in Brookline. They didn't want to shift the road south and lose the trees, and they didn't want to move the U-turn lane to another light, and they didn't want to cut the six parking spaces from the side of the road. So they left it with no space for a bike lane, constant double parkers, and a way-too-narrow sidewalk. The rare net loss for every mode.

Cab drivers have to play the game by the rules like everybody else.

In other words, find a spot, park and walk. Don't find a spot? Go somewhere else.

How is that so hard to understand.

That is actually the most sane temporary parking spot to idle at that intersection and I actually applaud him for it.

I was just in the south end and a cop parked his car in the silver line bus lane while he ate his lunch. Obviously that led to several other cars doing the same. A little protecting and some slothing.

Technically he's parked next to a curb. That's flagrantly not a legal parking space, but I can see how someone might get confused.

Parking so as to block a crosswalk is illegal, period, next to a curb or not, as far as I know.

What's the likelihood that any of the above got ticketed, or even reprimanded? Approaching nil, I would guess. So there you are, convenient free parking for the all-about-me cohort.

Crooked medallion systems & hackney units statewide = free pass for cabbies to screw over the public without consequence.

Technically Brookline doesn't have medallions -- they have annual licenses which you can't buy and sell. But in practice it isn't very different, since the same companies generally get to renew their licenses.

Brookline doesn't have a taxi medallion system... YET. They are in the process of implementing medallions in 2013. See here: http://www.wickedlocal.com/brookline/news/x1037525...

Taxi service in Brookline is already lousy, and the coming medallion system (and any resulting reduction in service) will only make it worse. I've already given up and switched to Uber when needing transportation in Brookline. Stupid, stupid, stupid money grab by the town...

You are talking about the town which got rid of expensive brand new smart parking meters because people were too lazy (the excuse was people with disabilities and the elderly which is a huge crock of shit) to walk back to their cars after getting the time stamped stickers.

he shouldn't park there, but really anyone could easily get by him.
