Park Street Church minister resigns after arrest on peeping-Tom charge

A minister at the Park Street Church resigned last week, two days after Brookline Police arrested him for allegedly "peering" into a neighbor's bedroom window after the neighbor's girlfriend had gotten out of the shower.

In a letter to church members, Senior Minister Gordon Hugenberger wrote:

On Tuesday, June 25, Park Street Church received a letter of resignation from John Chung, former Minister of Missions, based on serious personal problems he is facing. His resignation was accepted immediately. Park Street Church believes in a God of love who sent Jesus Christ into the world to provide a way of salvation. This gives us the courage to acknowledge, without excuses, the gravity of our failures and sins. It assures us of God's readiness to forgive those offenses, if we will humbly confess them, and it gives us the desire and strength to turn from them and seek to make things right. John's resignation was a welcome first step in this direction. We pray for God's comfort and healing, not only for John and his family, but also for all who have been disappointed and deeply hurt by this tragic circumstance.

Wicked Local Brookline reports Chung faces charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing for the incident, in which the neighbor spotted Chung at the window, yelled at him that he was "sick" and called police.

Innocent, etc.

I was thinking that if live in a city and you don't want people looking in your windows, you need to pull down the shades. Wicked Local article, however, makes it seem like this guy was walking around his (less than urban) neighborhood and specifically looking into windows. Creeper.

This is clearly unacceptable behavior for anyone.
I suggest we wait for the circumstances to become more clear, and not label a man "creeper". I know him and he is a fine person in many ways. I would not want to be defined so categorically and harshly by this one mistake. Would you want to be labeled for one rotten thing you did? We have all got things in our pasts that we would not want others to know about. As Jesus said, if you are without sin, you cast the first stone- but no one did.

Shade was drawn, he was caught with his face pressed up against the window. He had been noticed by several neighbors creeping around and was warned to stop. He was also caught and arrested on a prior occassion which was eventually dropped, probably because victim felt bad or didn't show up for court.

this creep is getting what he deserves. I feel bad for his wife and son. Imagine going to school and the other kids know your dad is a creep? Was he thinking of his family when he was being a pervert? no he wasn't.

Why is it that these things happen so frequently with clergy? disgusting

The circumstances are pretty clear. I know him too and am personally disappointed. He's a creeper in my book. Yes, we've all done things we wouldn't want others to know about, but most of us haven't committed a sex crime. At least he did the right thing and resigned, like he should have done last year when he was caught.

Props to Universal Hub for scooping The Globe on this one by 3 days.

The guy has issues and clearly needs help. Yes, only the Lord can pass judgement but this has most likely been going on for a long time. Why did the church allow him to continue in service after the first incident. Seems to me the he church is also at fault.

The church did not know about the past incident and he denies it was related to this one.

This is completely off-topic, but - One of the banner ads that came up on this uhub page in my browser was for the New Zealand Electoral Commission, aimed at Maoris living abroad. Why would this ad be on a Boston-specific website? Or does my browsing history line up with that of a Maori ex-pat?

I found it too bizarre to ignore...
