South Boston columnist: Keep your stupid 'progressive' bike lanes out of Southie

Just another example of Nanny State pinkos like Menino trying to foist their naive socialist ideas on the old town and destroy the neighborhood's proud tradition of double parking on Broadway, John Ciccone thunders, adding, of course, that Obama sucks.

H/t Chris Mullen.

Ed. note: Ciccone's column is called "Information Center," which will no doubt bring up fond memories for those of you who remember the busing crisis.

Naw. Just using the crazy to amuse ourselves. Its like reading an odd combination of the long lost Ed Anger editorials in the Weekly World News crossed with that weird elderly cartoonist in The Onion.

Speaking of The Onion, shouldn't you be tying one to your belt?

Not a day goes by that this godless Cantabrigian isn't thankful for bike lanes and not living in Southie. And I can say with certainty that bike lanes absolutely do not prevent people from double parking. So, fret not sir, you will be free to be even more effective an asshole if they do create bike lanes.

Knowing his type as I have my entire life, from living in the Bunker Hill projects to driving cab in Southie for years, John Ciccone may say that he's all for double parking and its necessity as a part of everyday life, but understand this: if you were some black guy double parked on Broadway and you blocked John Ciccone in when he was trying to get out, guess how many times you'd hear the word nigger thrown around?

So John, take it from an old school Charlestown and a long time resident of the L Street cab stand and not some gentrified yuppie, you're an old school, Howie Carr listening bigot who thinks Southie should still be all white. So save the bullshit for your pals who still dump their scratch tickets on the street in front of Schubert's.

I wish we could get rid of the bike lanes in Back Bay. It's a total disaster. Morons on bikes fly through red lights, careen into traffic. The bike lanes take away parking spots in back bay that hurts resident parking and businesses in back bay. Which mayoral candidate is against bike lanes?

I wish we could get rid of the car lanes in Back Bay. It's a total disaster. Morons in cars fly through red lights, careen into pedestrians in crosswalks. The cars lanes take away walking space in back bay that hurts residents and businesses in Back Bay. Which mayoral candidate is against car lanes?

Mr. Ciccone, you may have a great TREK bicycle, and, as you mention, enjoy riding it from time to time for recreation. However, I see that the main purpose of the bike lanes is for necessary transportation, that is, for people to get to where they absolutely need to go - such as to and from their job in the city. So your point about the TREK really derails your argument.

Bike lanes seems to be a very passion-inspiring issue. Lots of vitriol. Hey, all commenters, use some of that passion to do one small nice thing today, and eventually lead up to doing something every day. The world will be a more pleasant place. Namaste.

Yes, people get very passionate about not being run over by cars.

It looks like this exact argument goes on in other cities, and there is actually data to support the lanes:

Atlantic Cities: No, Bike Lanes Don't Hurt Retail Business
