Is it me
or does Edgar look kinda like a homeless guy?
Well
He kind of did look like a homeless guy. By modern standards.
Not that many of his bathing-averse era didn't.
Yes!
There is finally a bigger piece of crap in Park Square than the Abraham Lincoln Getting His Shoes Shined Statue.
Nice job sculptor. How many times did you drop acid and watch Twilight before designing this?
It is a trip--definitely.
There is an actual heart tumbling out of the suitcase. A heart. Next to the giant raven. The whole thing is completely over the top, and yet...there's something about it I already kind of like. It's bonkers but it's kind of great in its craziness.
I love that Lincoln statue
I love that Lincoln statue and wish it was in more visible location.
It used to be back when the
It used to be back when the grand Boston & Providence rail terminal was still there. Subsequent reconfiguration of Park Square have since shoved it to increasingly less prominent locations.
Not Art
Granted, it's not jagged pieces of rusted, twisted and bent steel welded together randomly, but I still like it somehow.
Cool statue, but didn't Poe
Cool statue, but didn't Poe hate Boston?
The Jingle Man vs the Frogpondians
There was an interesting NY Times article today about Poe's love-hate relationship with the literary elite of Boston (Emerson, Thoreau, Longfellow, Hawthorne). Cliff notes version: Emerson thought Poe was simplistic and nicknamed him "the jingle man", while Poe thought the "Frogpondians" were well bred but dull, with their moralistic works sounding like the croaking of a bunch of frogs. Looks like the Frogpondians won this round, claiming Poe as one of their own. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The statue's eyes
look like they are saying "I have not slept in a fortnight."
True!
But it does look an awful lot like the photographs of him--he did have a wee bit of an eye bag issue and was fairly glum looking. He actually looks exactly the way I think I imagined him as a kid.
Yes!
Poe is one of my favorite passed literary people. He always seemed to appear a bit baggy eyed to me, also.
Poor guy...had a tough life.
