The folks at the Boston City Archives wonder if you can place this photo. See it larger.

But where on Green Street? Too flat to be near Washington street, and the old boarding house & carriage factories aren't visible in the distance.

*edited for typos. i hate swype

Seems that Mr. Thos. Decatur moved his grocery store nearer to his home in Jamaica Plain. He's listed as a market owner at 11 and 12 Blackstone and a home owner in Jamaica Plain.

I'm betting that he set up shop closer to home after the Big Fire.

Oakdale St running parallel to them on the left. The carriage factory is out of frame to the right.

And I'll check it from the street in a few hours when I head to Canto 6!

I am not going to do any archaeology here, but the German Cologne sign in the window of the store makes me think of Boylston street, and the old German club on Danforth street, which is now in Walpole , the Boylston Shul-Verein (http://www.germanclub.org/Home.aspx )

Yes, this is at Green St. Here's a photo from another angle: http://www.jphs.org/photogallery/historic-jamaica-plain-photos-gallery-1...

Its Green Street, before the embankment was made to eliminate the at-grade crossings. It's not Boylston (current Stony Brook) as Danforth St goes up a hill immediately after crossing Lamartine.

In the full-sized photo you can make out a "JAMAICA PLAIN" sign and a shelter over the inbound platform. JP Station was the only station to have one before the embankment project of the mid-1890s. The inbound shelter was built circa 1875-1883, inclusive. Based on that and the guys huddled by the bench, I'm gonna say this photo was taken in the very late 1880s. Note the three-track ROW; post elevation a fourth was added.

The German store was turned into a package store until the Orange Line was rebuilt.
