I've see better punches between nuns. Thanks for posting this. This convinced me to drive tomorrow. I wouldn't want to get hit by a Wesleyan class ring at Nantasket Junction.

Can someone explain what they are fighting over?

Some guy took his spacesaver when he went to the bathroom and another guy sat in his space before he came back. Yadda yadda yadda - cat fight - which given the video is an insult to my cats.

I would call you a liar and say there aren't any bathrooms on the commuter rail had it not been for the one time I ever encountered one: when I got locked in one in 2006 while drunkenly leaving a Super Bowl party, taking the commuter rail, and regaining my sense of being while struggling to escape from that smelly, moving pit of doom. I can't say I've ever seen another bathroom on a train since.

Side bar, but I'm not sure if your handle is an homage to it, or just some happenstance, but Stevil was a funny thing to drunkenly run into in Paris some years back.

All commuter rail trains have a restroom in the first car behind the locomotive. This is required by law.

Given the length of commutes and number of people aboard, I'm guessing "smelly pit of doom" accurately describes what it's like to use them right now.

It's always like that to use them. I had the unpleasant need of one of the older (500-series) car restrooms once when sick. Horrific. They're basically port-a-potties built into the cars.

The double deckers are slightly better (they have actual plumbing). But still subject to lack of cleaning and abuse of so many caring passengers.

Bring hand sanitizer in the winter. Unlikely to have running water in the sink.

on the newer cars, there are bathrooms.

But that's cool - I've found that the term "Stevil" is not all that uncommon.

The origin of mine is that I'm basically Uncle Buck - no kids, but I take the nieces and nephews out for fun times when they visit. Always topped off with a visit to the candy store - usually right before I give them back to my sister for a 5 hour car ride home on a massive sugar high. After doing this for the thousandth time - my sister turns to me and says "Steve - you're evil. You're Stevil" - and it stuck - now all the kids call me Uncle Stevil.

My favorite story is about my (then) 6 year old niece trying to convince her first grade teacher that she has an uncle whose real name is Stevil.

is one of my favorite movies, I have to ask if you also drive a 1978 Ford Granada that is 15 years overdue for its 80,000 mile tune up.

Dairy Fresh Candies closed? (or did you frequent a different candy store?)

first on Newbury and later on Boylston. Now there's a new one on Newbury as well but I don't know the name offhand. It's all overpriced -but the kids don't care - and if you factor in the look on my sister's face when the kids show up with half eaten giant bags of candy - way worth it! :-)

Roadman - My car now HAS 80,000 miles so I guess I need to stop having it serviced for the next 15 years - but alas it's not a Ford Granada.

I've seen women duke it out on the Ashmont branch at 7am on a Monday morning.

(and so far as I am concerned, the spirit of the 1940 chant lives on, even after that lucky crap in 94).

just sitting there enjoying the show, not doing anything to intervene, break it up, or be concerned that two fellow human beings are attacking one another. Boston has become a sad, sad state of humanity. The guy in the red cap closest to the fight doesn't even flinch when fists are thrown, the guy in the foreground just looks up, then down again, adjusting his ipad, and the another guy on the left doesn't even look up from his phone. So sad.

It used to be worse. I wasn't in Boston in the 1970s-80s, when street crime was at its worst, but I am familiar with New York and Philadelphia during those years, because I spent a lot of time in both places. That era was the absolute zenith of "It's not my problem, I don't want to intervene."

But I'm sure it wouldn't interest anybody outside of a small circle of friends.

if you read/watch the WHDH story, they claim that there were good samartians who were trying to break it up and got involved in the punching also.

Plus not like there was any place to MOVE on that train to even get closer to help.

I can't believe some enterprising person didn't have a taser or gun handy
which could have been passed along up front to then be used by all
offended parties. FL and TX, represent.

If one of the passengers had a hand grenade, they could have just pulled the pin and tossed it into the melee. That would have put an end to it!

"I see two individuals yelling at each other. And then all of a sudden some punches were bring thrown. Then some people were good enough to try and keep the peace but those people got in the middle of it and had a few punches thrown their way too," the passenger said.

?
If you watch the video again you will clearly see that people intervened immediately to separate the fighters.

Sadly given the state of the MBTA and the general frustration, I'm surprised an instance like this hadn't happened until now.

Disclaimer: In no way am I condoning violence. Regardless of the cause, a physical altercation is never appropriate.

Some people did try to help and got stuck in it themselves. What do you expect? This isn't some after school special. Jumping up to say "come on guys, can't we all just talk it out, ya know?" isn't going to give everyone the happy resolution you're looking for. It sucks but no one should be expected to put themselves in harm's way when two other adults decide they want to fight each other.

or the Transit Police? If they are making video of the fight, that will be useful to the police later.

Boston has become a sad, sad state of humanity.

No, Boston is the same as it was in the 1980s when something similar happened on my red line train. Fight broke out and nobody did nothing, just pretended nothing was happening.

It happens everywhere. It's called the Bystander Effect.

Yeah it doesn't look right but it just happens because people freeze and just watch.

The Globe is reporting that dangerous assaults skyrocketed on the MBTA last year. Next stop an accidental bump or deliberate push will lead to a riot. The Governor has sent in prisoners to shovel out the T, he is now going to have to send in MSP to police the T

...about the hundreds of thousands of commutes these past three weeks that have been delayed, crowded, and outright canceled (with thousands more on frozen platforms in subfreezing weather), the resiliency, good humor, patience, and intestinal fortitude of fellow commuters has been something to behold.

No. it's not Ukraine, but give people credit under the circumstances.

All of my commutes have involved jam packed trains, but I haven't really heard the snark I'm used to.

Confession time- the day after the Super Bowl, I was having trouble getting off the train at Back Bay, mainly due to people who decided to board before we were off. The only option then is to get the elbows up. My target threw a soft swing back at me. Can't blame him, nor him me I'm sure. Still, that was 3 weeks ago.
