Codman Square!
Ha! I went to Girls' Latin there! (Before it became Boston Latin Academy.) At the time of this photo it would have been Dorchester High School, though.
Geee
I went to that school for six, um, wonderful? years... so yes, I can. Housing now.
Codman Square
Depending on the date, Dorchester High, later Girls Latin. Looks like 1940s or 50s from the clothes.

40s or 50s?
The clothes looked more modern to me as well (except for that one kind of flapper-looking woman on the left, with the big fur collar on her coat), but based on the cars, I doubt 1950s or even 40s.
I'd say 30s....
... but all the winter coats make it harder to tell.
From the car...
From the car in the background, I'd guess mid to late 30's. The car on the right looks like a 1934-5 Ford.
Yeah--look at the cars.
20s-30s, I'd think. And yes--my grandmother's alma mater!
Trolleys and busses
Cars look 1930s to me. Clothes also. Interesting that their is both a bus and a trolley in the picture. According to the source of all knowledge Wikipedia, the trolley line on Washington St stopped in 1949.
The Norfolk St. bus still
The Norfolk St. bus still runs today as part of Route 26 (it was merged with the Gallivan Blvd bus route in 1981 to form the present route 26 belt route). Both routes started in 1928/29, around the time Ashmont station opened.
Ok, so it's a bus to Norfolk
Ok, so it's a bus to Norfolk Street, not the town of Norfolk.
My mother's as well. In fact
My mother's as well. In fact, she was probably a student there at the time the picture was taken. I always wonder if I'll ever see any relatives in these old photos, that would be great.
I was looking for the 51
I was looking for the 51 Plymouth on the way to my uncles house..........

Is this of Girl's Latin?
I was wondering--I knew it moved around.
Yes, I put up the link that
Yes, I put up the link that copied the building dates out of.
My grandmother went there too
But not in Dot, the one on West Newton Street as reference by kvn above.

And my grandmother would have gone to
Huntington Ave. From what I recall, it was a huge leap from Dorchester to the WASP-y cultural center of Boston--music, theatre, art.
Codman Square, Talbot Ave.
Codman Square, Talbot Ave.
The Answer!
Thanks for playing folks! This is indeed Codman Square, showing Dorchester High School for Girls. The date is February 25, 1935.
Hmm...
If I recall correctly, there was a very brief period in 1929 when both streetcars (usually Type 4's and Center-Entrances) and buses both ran on Norfolk Street. Dudley - Norfolk cars ran via Warren, Grove Hall, and Four Corners; as noted above, the buses ran from Ashmont to a tiny loop via Corbett Street.
There weren't any direct switches from Talbot Avenue to Norfolk Street, making an Ashmont - Norfolk trolley line impossible without installing new switches. It seems the El just said "meh" and put on motor buses instead.
A final note: right where Norfolk Street crosses the Midland Division is a brown tenement with a laundromat on the first floor. It was built by the West End in conjunction with the track extension from Codman Square and is one of the few buildings to have been A) built by the WESRy and B) still be in existence.
