First woman runner to cross the Marathon finish line crosses it again
By adamg on Mon, 04/18/2016 - 12:17pm
Jean Nagy watched Bobbi Gibb cross the Marathon finish line 50 years after she became the first woman to finish the race - after having to sneak in because officials denied her application since they just knew women were physically incapable of running 26 miles and 385 yards.

Marathon Public Drinking
I'm just wondering if the Boston Police plan to cite people for public drinking and force all the bars along the Marathon route to close early like they did for St. Patrick's Day in South Boston. I haven't seen anything in the news about it and I know that there is a lot of public drinking and overcrowded bars at this event. Does anyone know what the plan is? Are they planning a St. Patrick's Day style crackdown on this behavior or are they just going to let people drink and smoke pot in public, like they do for the Carribbean Festival? If anyone knows the answer, please share. Happy Patriot's Day!
police crack down
i hope the police crack down on you.
Really? Think about it.
The St. Patrick's Day parade route is a lot smaller than 26 miles, and no one's tried to bomb it lately that I know of. Boston endures public drunkenness on a regular basis (just walk down Boylston Street when the Red Sox are in town), and while it's distasteful, it doesn't often result in mass casualty incidents.
tl;dr: priorities.
???
What does all that have to do with me asking if the same public drinking and barroom regulations will be applied equally?
Your premise is wrong
If the Marathon were known for public drunkenness and brawling, and police did nothing comparable to what they do in South Boston, you'd have a point. But it isn't (yes, there is some drinking along the route, but BPD has enough resources to deal with some college kids sitting on stoops or roofs with beers).
Sitting on stoops or roofs is not public drinking
since the stoops and roofs are private property. (It may still be underage drinking, but that's a different legal offense.)
???? Indeed
THIS POST IS ABOUT BOBBI GIBB!
IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU OR WHATEVER DUMBASS PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING!
GO AWAY!
Seriously?
You have some nerve posting a completely irrelevant and off-topic whine about drinking that has nothing at all to do with the Continuing Awesomeness of Bobbi Gibb, and then returning to whine some more that the responses to your insensitive threadjack weren't "on topic" enough for you.
Better question
When you think about the Boston Marathon, is the first thing you think of really public drunkenness?
Is it anyone's first thought?
lol no
no it isnt
first thought?
Not even my last thought.
What a problem
Someone should do something to help Boston cops and Irish people find common ground.
THINK OF THE CHILDREN!
Many of those folks who get up early to see the reenactment in Lexington may be seen sipping from thermoses and flasks. We need a cop with a breathalyzer to make sure none of that cider/cocoa/coffee is spiked!
Report from BU Police
The Daily Free Press reports there were some issues, but:
Bobbi Gibb
Awesome lady. I wonder what it was like to be told that marathons were physically too strenuous for women, knowing that many of your peers were giving birth (or would over the next few years).
Maybe they were afraid that having women in the marathon would lead to women being violently attacked by nasty old jerks when all they wanted to do was run?
My favorite thing about her
50 years later she is still running. No, not marathons, but she is still pounding the pavement.
This year's winner gave her trophy to Gibb
Aw.
