Meet the beetles

City councilors take up Asian Longhorned Beetles tonight, at a hearing at Franklin Park.

The session starts at 6 p.m. at the Franklin Park Clubhouse, 1 Circuit Dr.

The hearing is by the council's Committee on Environment and Health, which will review work done to keep the tree-killing alien bugs from spreading past the grounds of Faulkner Hospital, where six infested trees were found last year. Federal officials immediately imposed a quarantine area around the hospital - residents are not allowed to bring any tree limbs outside the area. The latest plans call for injecting trees - or in some cases, the ground around trees, with insecticide in the area surrounding the hospital.

At he hearing, experts will explain how to identify possible evidence of beetle infestation.

"Among the strengths of West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, and Roslindale are the parks and open space areas," City Councilor Matt O'Malley (West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain) says. "Anything that could threaten that warrants immediate attention, education, and prevention."

Prosecutors, lawmakers seek to crack down on pimps, johns

WBUR reports on a legislative effort to redefine pimps as human traffickers:

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley regrets that his staff used to arrest and charge young women for prostitution while pimps and johns went free. He is also troubled by the fact that in the United States, on average, girls get into prostitution between the ages of 12 and 14. Boys and transgendered youth usually start between 11 and 13. ... "I concluded that the best way to deal with this problem is to treat the prostitutes, especially the young ones, as victims," Conley said.

Verizon DSL dead in Boston area

UPDATE: Four minutes after I posted this, from my phone, the service was back up.

Hey, these things happen. But it would be nice if the network techs would tell the support techs so they and customers wouldn't waste amazing amounts of time going through fruitless exercises like rebooting modems and running line diagnostics.

Not that I'm bitter after 40 minutes online and on the phone with support. Julia Rappaport says she spent two hours on hold and the 45 minutes on the line with a tech. Outage reports come from Roslindale, the Back Bay, Cambridge and Ward 2 in Somerville. Other parts of Somerville, Quincy and Salem report no problems.

Mass. Ave. liquor store smashed into again

For the second time in three days, somebody smashed the front door to Liquor Land, 1033 Mass. Ave. And for the second time in three days, police report making an arrest, shortly after midnight today:

Shortly after establishing the perimeter, officers observed a liquid trail leading from the store, to the sidewalk and into a baseball field in the park behind the store. As officers made their way, following the path, toward the infield they observed an individual walking along the left side of the field. As officers approached the suspect, he quickly exited the fenced in area of the field and started walking away. Officers stopped the suspect and during the threshold inquiry of the suspect, officers observed shards of glass on the suspect's clothing and noted that his clothing was wet with some type of liquid.

Henry Soto, 30, was charged with breaking and entering in the nighttime.

Innocent, etc.

Covering eyesores until they can be permanently fixed

St. Leonard's Peace Garden

Imagine City Hall or the Hynes covered in vines.

If Nate Swain has his way, it could happen. For the past couple of years, he's been covering eyesores in the North End with vinyl canvases covered with high-resolution photos. See if you can spot his work in the photo above.

His first project was in a building facing Salem and Prince streets in 2009. He photographed and then printed scenes such as a cat on a windowsill with flowers in pots; a goldfish swimming in a bowl, printed them onto a mesh vinyl back, then installed them over the windows. The idea is to create a sort of an "idyllic" concept, as he calls it.

Marco the police dog takes a bite out of crime after holdup at Sullivan Square T stop

JaneiroMBTA Transit Police report arresting one of three men who allegedly held a woman up at knifepoint just past midnight Sunday at the Sullivan Square T stop - after a police dog bit him in the ass.

According to a police report, a woman was standing by the upper busway when three Hispanic men approached her, pulled out knives and demanded her money. For good measure, they called her a "nigger." She told them, in Spanish, that she was Hispanic herself, but that didn't work. After they fled, and police arrived, she got in an cruiser with an officer - and Marco, the police dog.
