Know roads and trash issues? There's a job for you in Boston

The mayor's office just announced that Boston DPW and transportation chief Dennis Royer quit today, effective immediately, and is returning to his native Colorado.

That the announcement was made late on a Friday, a time typically reserved for announcements of bad news, is, no doubt, pure coincidence.

Police: Man steals car, goes on high-speed joy ride that ends in South End crash and death of the guy he took with him

Boston Police report Warren Tyler took advantage of a motorist leaving his car running at a gas station to steal the car, then go on a short joy ride that killed one man and sent Tyler and a truck driver in the hospital last night.

Tyler, 44, of Randolph, is charged with stealing the car around 11:45 p.m. from the Citgo station at 3050 Washington St in Roxbury. Not long after the owner reported the car stolen, police say, an officer leaving the District D-4 station in the South End saw the car "traveling at a high rate of speed with no head lights illuminated."

Police took off after it, then noticed smoke at the intersection of Harrison and Berkeley:

Officers approached that intersection and there observed a motor vehicle accident involving the stolen motor vehicle and a delivery truck. Officers immediately requested EMS to the scene and approached the accident scene and looked inside the stolen car. Inside the stolen car, officers observed the operator of the car slumped over the wheel and a passenger who appeared to be suffering serious head and chest injuries in front passenger seat. Officers next approached the delivery truck and found a victim seated in the back of the truck bleeding from the head.

Tylerr's passenger was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center. The truck driver, who was in the back of his vehicle at the time, was taken to Tufts Medical Center with non-fatal facial and head injuries. Tyler was taken to Boston Medical Center with head and leg injuries.

Tyler faces charges of receiving a stolen motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a revoked licens and possession of crack cocaine.

Innocent, etc.

Coakley's campaign leaves voters in the dark

The problem with the low-key cautious campaign that race leaders with large leads frequently choose to run is that the public does not get to know their candidate very well.

Latest from MBCR:

More useless and expensive electronic gizoms that "feel good but do little if any actual good" are coming. Just got this e-mail from them:

NEW CUSTOMER INFORMATION SYSTEM
Now boarding…!

The PTIS (Passenger Train Information System) is ready for launching on the Greenbush, Middleborough/Lakeville and Plymouth/Kingston Lines and will go into service January 8, 2010. This system will provide you with “real-time” information at stations and utilizes a countdown format on easy to read electronic message boards while you are standing on the platform. This has been made possible by the recent installation of the GPS equipment on each train that also provides automated on-board announcements. The new system will give you accurate train arrival information and help improve safety by alerting passengers of the approaching train.

Coming Soon!

In conjunction with the “next train” countdown offering the MBTA is also preparing to launch a communications system that will allow passengers to get this same information from their car radios. You will soon be able to tune-in to a frequency on your car’s AM dial so that you can stay in your automobile until just before your train is due to arrive at the station. This will be rolled out and tested at the Anderson Regional Transportation Center by the end of January with availability at all stations that have 50 or more parking spaces to follow soon after.

For updates on both of these exciting new prospects please log on to www.mbta.com

They don't want to pay to keep the trains properly staffed and maintained, yet they somehow find money to waste on "essential" public information systems because management has decided that they need to appease people who are too lazy to look up a train schedule or keep an eye on their watch. Where's the outrage?
