Entertaining city councilors

Johnny works up a lather over news that city-council candidates will perform in a variety show at the Riverside Theatre Works in Hyde Park next month:

... One city council candidate "says he'll tell jokes and twirl his baton, which he keeps in his campaign vehicle at all times in case of parades." This man should clearly have a large voice in running the city. ... Someone needs to start up some kind of social policy talent show, where the politicians get serious about actual problems for 5 minutes, instead of just flexing their social butterfly/used car salesman muscles.

Jury duty

About 95% of trials in Massachusetts last three days or less. 12 Frogs is on the jury for one of the 5-percent cases:

... I feel a need for a rant about lawyers, doctors, and the need to be right coming on. Also possibly a rant about time-wasting in the court system, and the funny idea that you are paid less for actively (versus passively) participating in the system. But since I've got this whole need-to-be-ethical thing going on, I have to wait until the trial is over. Let that be soon.

Vinyl

Paul reads that the Garment District is getting rid of all its old records (yes, records!), giving 'em away, in fact, and so he rushes over and digs through all the Bobby Fenton and Christian stuff to uncover some gems by names you must know:

... Now I probably should get a turntable so I can see just how bad all of the other stuff is.

Bill Weld for governor

So His Boredness deigns to give being governor another shot - of New York this time. David runs down all the reasons he probably has no chance (Number 1: Eliot Spitzer is no human ball of anger like John Silber), but says what will be interesting is watching Weld's interaction with his fellow Republicans:

... It will be interesting, however, to see how the national GOP reacts to a truly socially moderate candidate like Weld running for a major office in an important state. It will also be interesting to see whether Weld feels any need at least to play nice with, if not necessarily to toe the party line of, the national party. Should have some entertainment value, if nothing else.

Whole lotta ice cream goin' down

3Mote is sampling every place that sells ice cream within easy commute of Watertown - loves Cabot's, hates Friendly's and Cold Stone Creamery:

... Holy jesus, is Cabot's ice cream good. We've eaten there a few times, and while the patty melt I had was OK, the food is sub-par. Cabot's excels at mounding massive amounts of ice cream and toppings into tiny cups and unleashing it on your poor stomach. ...

Boycott blood donations?

Jeremiah doesn't like that the Red Cross won't take blood from gay men or people with tattoos, so he's calling for a boycott on blood donations until it changes the policy. He doesn't discuss what would happen if people took him up on it and he showed up at the hospital after, say, a bad car accident.

Do you use Boston Feeds?

It's the automated aggregator part of the site, i.e., it scoops up new headlines and links from local blogs (if you're curious, click on Boston Feeds above). If you are using it, please let me know, either in a comment or via e-mail.

The reason I ask is I *think* it's responsible for the wicked slow performance on Universal Hub over the past few days; it doesn't seem designed to handle large numbers of feeds (it's past 350 of 'em now). So I'm thinking of taking it down for awhile to see what happens. If nothing happens, then I look for some other problem; but if that does cure things, then I'd have to consider pulling it down for good (in which case I'd post a Boston OPML file you could import into your own personal aggregator).
