Hey, you know how they always say not to run extension cords under carpets?

Remember that nine-alarm fire in the Back Bay in April? The Boston Fire Department today announced:

The cause of the 9-alarm fire on April 7, 2010 at the Beacon Towers Condominium building, 483 Beacon Street, has been found to have been an electrical short circuit. Specifically, an extension cord running under a piece of carpet in a seventh floor unit shorted out to cause the fire. The building remains closed for renovations.

Depending on whether you want 5' or 10' of cord coverage, that's what it costs for a walk over cord protector. When we renovated our kitchen and had cords going everywhere for the fridge in the dining room (it had to be on a certain circuit to not blow out the breaker when we also used the microwave or toaster oven) and for power for tools, we used some made by wiremold and purchased at Lowes.

I'm on their mailing list. What you see is pretty much all they released (there was another paragraph about how they have yet to determine the cause of that fatal fire in East Boston. Nothing actually online that I can see at www.cityofboston.gov/fire
