Which I know because MassDOT just sent out an advisory that Luisa Paiewonsky, MassDOT highway division administrator, will be holding a press conference at 10:45, right under the repair work. The advisory did not state whether reporters will be given hard hats.
93 was backed up for miles. Oh and then they got all the lanes open, but people had to slow down to 20mph to go "huh-huh, towtruck!" once the damaged cars were off the road and were being loaded onto trucks.
Oh, and usually the flashing-sign programmers are pretty good about including "stay right" or "stay left" or whatever, but they didn't yesterday. Might've helped somewhat, though there's always of course the people who think they're going to get ahead by merging at the last minute.
The backup of cars trying to get onto 93 was so bad yesterday, that at 4:40 PM (!), traffic was already backed up into the Longwood and Fenway area. We're talking worse than any post-5pm backup you would see. And the backup was one continuous snake of cars all the way to the various 93 entrances. Storrow, Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Route 28 in Somerville, they were at a standstill a solid 20 minutes before any rush usually begins.
I would have loved to have taken the T to my rehearsal up north last night, but the commuter rail doesn't get reverse commuters beyond the commuter rail station. No local service from most of the stations. The times I've considered taking jobs outside of the city, I've found that I'd have to walk a couple miles from the nearest train station.
These bridges vault streets that traverse cuts and ravines at the base of the hills that form the north margins of the Mystic Valley, otherwise known as The Fells. The roadways they span are quite old, and tie North Medford and points east with Medford Square ... in other words, they still knit the city together and have for centuries.
Yes, I know you are kidding - but the roadway underneath is called "Valley St." for a reason! Point is, the highway spans and vaults a busy urban area that was here long before ... and The Fells.

It was repaired, but the new hole opened up early Wednesday
Just keep patching the car-sized holes until someone dies. Are they not going to inspect the entire span?
Where exactly is this?
Folks who drive, bike, or walk UNDER this part of I-93 should be concerned too.
Valley Street in Medford

Cringe
I'm glad I have a bike helmet on every time I go under that mess. It was spitting concrete at the sides earlier this year.
And since people don't know how to fucking merge

The do get ahead
Driving up the closed lane and merging late does get you through faster. Don't you hate it?
Just bad manners which is considered normal in the Hub.

Sounds like a good
Sounds like a good advertisement for commuter rail
Unless you aren't commuting, or you're reverse commuting

Biking in 99F Heat Index was no picnic
But, hey, sure was fun flying down the trail along the Mystic at 15-20 mph past four stalled lanes.
Shades of 1973 in New York
Shades of 1973 in New York City, when a dump truck fell through the (since torn down) elevated West Side Highway.
Maybe we should just bury
Maybe we should just bury this stretch of 93 and make a nice new park on top?
Sure, as long as...
...it doesn't have 20 lanes of surface traffic!
Overpasses don't Bury
