Maybe the T should just declare Scheduled Maintenance Day and shut all the subways at once

Evan reports on his attempt to get home last night:

... Coming back on an Orange Line southbound train, customers wanting to take the Blue Line were told that it wasn't running through State, so they had to transfer to a Green train at Haymarket, take that to Govt Center, and then take shuttle bus replacement service for the Blue Line from there. Further down the Orange Line, we were asked to exit at Back Bay and take a shuttle bus between there and Ruggles (once again, I opted to walk instead, as I was planning on going to Mass Ave Station, just one stop down the line). How I feel for newcomers to the city...especially those coming in from Logan Airport late at night. All this...for "scheduled maintenance". ...

The T is not a 24 hour system, why cant they do all of this non-emergency repair work overnight and then clear out during business hours? Probably for the same reason they were running the "rail grinding train" during morning rush hour when it tipped. I'm sure some jobs require a long downtime but it seems that they've made a habit out of it on the weekends, I dread seeing the notices on the seats Friday.

They can't do maintenance at night because people living around the areas of the tracks complain about the noise levels that late at night and back it up by laws about noise levels.
