Here's your chance to grab a hunka hunka burnin' love, or, at least, have a date with one

Local 718 is holding a bachelor auction tonight at 8 at Dillon's, 955 Boylston St. Ten firefighters will be auctioned off for a "jake date." Ladies only, apparently. Proceeds from the auction - and from the barbecue that begins at 4 - go to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Interview with one of the firefighters - along with a photo of him holding a puppy.

How heteronormative of them. Maybe some guys with spare cash might want a charity date with a hunky firefighter.

What gives, ladies only? It's not like they are really going on a date or doing more. Are these dudes that insecure?

It's an auctioned-off date. There's no implication that the firefighter is attracted to the person who bought him -- or even that he's single and/or interested in dating.

If it's appropriate to say that the firefighters are only willing to go on fake dates with women, then isn't it likewise appropriate to say that they're only willing to go on fake dates with white women, thin women, able-bodied women, etc.?

Seriously though, are they violating the city's nondiscrimination codes here? Anyone know?

The word "date" does imply "possible romantic involvement". From the dictionary:

a : an appointment to meet at a specified time; especially : a social engagement between two persons that often has a romantic character

Yes, you're right, "date" does not always have romantic connotations, but it does in this case.

If you're with me so far (and I doubt you are...), no straight guy wants to go out on a date with a gay guy. In fact, no gay guy wants to go out on a date with a straight guy. There is no possibility of romance. It would be like setting me up (a straight guy) on a date with you (a lesbian). Date? No way. Wine, beers, food, laughs? Possible. But, what they are offering up for auction is a date, so I see your claims as a bit of a stretch. Actually, a huge stretch.

Now, if a gay/lesbian firefighter wanted to offer himself/herself up for auction, that would be great.

That's my 2 cents.

I think there needs to be an analogous rule to Godwin's Law involving someone pulling out a dictionary definition.

Thanks, I know what a date is. These are fake dates, being auctioned off for charity. It's really no different from winning "lunch with (local celebrity)" at an auction, except that they're playing up the stereotype of male firefighters being conventionally attractive. The winner clearly knows (or should know) that s/he gets to have lunch with the celebrity and gets to have a good time, but this doesn't in any way make them personal friends or suggest that they'd invite each other out on their own time or anything.

You inadvertently brought up a good point though; so, a lesbian is free to go on a date with a male firefighter, but a gay or straight man isn't. So clearly this has nothing to do with making sure the date is a legitimate date in which romantic attraction is involved; it's just a way of ensuring a heteronormative image.

Not quite what I meant.

I meant that it would have been good for a gay/lesbian firefighter to offer themselves up for auction for a same-sex date.

do these fools have any clue how much money they're missing out on?

because they would rather hang with women to raise money for a cause than a gay man. Such cavemen.

A heterosexual date auction?!? Oh, the horror!

Some of you people have way too much time on your hands.
