Dorchester just can't seem to shake that reputation

See this discussion, which basically boils down to people who have never been there going "ew" and people who actually live there telling those people they don't know what they're talking about.

If he scares pretentious people away from the neighborhood, all the better.

I've both visited friends and extended family in Dorchester, and biked through sections of it on the way from a former job in Mission Hill toward the south shore.

I am also familiar with census demographics and mapping and have, at one time, done thematic maps of various demographic and socioeconomic indicators for much of the Boston Area as well as for Greater Lowell.

How anybody can say much of anything descriptive about Dorchester as a whole is really beyond me. It isn't just a neighborhood, it is a series of neighborhoods, all of them different, some are more affluent, some are far less so. Some are stacked and crowded and treeless, some are graced by grand old Queen Anne Victorians perched on rocks and hills and sporting spacious lawns. Some are mostly single and two family areas, some are brick blocks.

I don't see how anybody with even a passing familiarity can ever generalize here. I have to wonder how many people who are ragging on the place have ever been to or through it, at any speed where they could get a sense of the place(s).

Who says you live in the "loser" part of town?

You live in Roslindale, right?

See comment VII (hmm, if you get a ton of comments, would we see comment CXXXIII?).

And, yes, we live in Roslindale and are raising a Rozzie rat.

I can only assume that the cook who boo'd Roslindale was being sarcastic, as there's little to complain about and everyone I know is moving here. If not, boo to him.

As for the rest of the comments, I thought it was great that all of them were so positive. Having grown up in Dorchester its nice to hear how many young people are moving in and that there is an influx of money. All of the comments posted there were right on. Dorchester is huge and can't be thought of as one neighborhood. The vast majority of Dot. is safe, clean, pretty and quiet. There just happen to be a few places that are still very hairy and get in the news alot. Its filled with rail-based public transportation (don't forget the Reedville Line) and its close to everything. You can also still earn urban-cred for living there.
