Time to rename Yawkey Way?
By adamg on Fri, 11/11/2011 - 8:59am
Joe Paterno just lost his job as an alleged enabler of a child rapist. Seems Tom Yawkey engaged in the same thing back in the early 1970s with the clubhouse manager at the Sox spring-training camp in Florida.

Change it back to Jersey
Change it back to Jersey Street?
slavery was permitted in New
slavery was permitted in New Jersey by grants to Lords Berkeley and Cataret in mid 17th century, many slaves were used for household labor for next 100-150 years until anti-slavery sentiment took hold. So Jersey Street isn't totally PC either.
Wrong Jersey
Jersey Street is part of the Back Bay system of alphabetical British dukes, starting with Arlington. Nothing at all to do with New Jersey, so no NJ taint.

Sandusky's a rapist, not a molester.
Alleged, but yeah
Changed the post (but correct me if I'm wrong, it's more an issue of English - legally they're the same thing, no?).
I'm sure...
Sandusky's fellow prisoners will note the difference when they're doing to him what he did to those poor kids. Let's just say he'll go from top to bottom real quick.
Lots of other Yawkey stuff needs renaming, then
starting with...
the MBTA's Yawkey Station nearby,
buildings called 'Yawkey Center' at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and Mass. General Hospital,
the Jean Yawkey Center for Community Leadership at Emmanuel College,
the Special Olympics' Yawkey Sports Training Center in Marlborough,
and most especially the Boys and Girls Clubs' Yawkey Club of Roxbury.
The last one has bothered me ever since it was renamed that in 2006, given Tom Yawkey's well-documented bigotry against African-Americans. (Read Howard Bryant's book Shut Out: A Story of Race and Baseball in Boston if you're not familiar with this subject.)

And they'll all give back the money?
Washington street? Owned
Washington street? Owned slaves. Franklin street? Ditto.
Don't forget Winthrop
One of Massachusetts' first slave owners.
Columbus Ave.
He never actually made it to these shores and was a charlatan of sorts. But we just covered all that a short while ago.
Columbus is a hero to Latin
Columbus is a hero to Latin Americans and Italian Americans.
Does anyone remember this in the news up here?
I have no recollection of hearing about this before. Where was the Boston press at the time, when these reports were coming to light? The link here refers to some Globe reporting in the early 2000s, but it rings no bells for me.
Anyone else even recall the news from the time?
I remember
Yes, it was in the Globe back then. It did not get the national publicity that the Penn State scandal is getting today. Times have changed.
I have to wonder if Fitzpatrick had something on the Yawkeys, and that's why he wasn't fired.
Cancellation fever
Dan Shaughnessy and Maureen Dowd and many others have climbed on the Penn State cancel-the-season bandwagon. And while we're at it, cancel next season too. I wonder if Shaughnessy called for the Red Sox to cancel their season after the earlier scandal? Somehow I doubt it.
The coaches and administrators who did wrong and covered things up, they should pay a big price. But the students, the players, the fans, the community? They did nothing wrong. No games should be cancelled.
