Rally for Safe Cambridge Street in Allston - Tuesday at 8 a.m.
By HarryMattison on Thu, 07/24/2014 - 6:21pm
MassDOT and the City are designing a new Cambridge Street, but while we have waited for these plans to become a reality there have been multiple pedestrian and cyclist deaths on Cambridge Street in recent years.
As we plan for the future, the new street needs world-class design for mass transit and people walking, running, and biking. But safety measures can't wait!
People who walk, bike, take the bus, and drive a car should all be able to move safely through our neighborhoods right now. Stop by Tuesday morning to tell the State & the City that we need immediate solutions including:
- Fix broken street lights
- Implement changes ASAP so cars and trucks drive at safe speeds
- Make sure users can safely access MBTA bus stops via crosswalks.

A.M or P.M?
8 a.m. on a work day is a tough one.
Liveable Streets?!
You mean those socialist commie bike lobbyists that are feeding off the public trough at the expense of drivers god given rights to drive fast!? Bumpouts, road diets and bright reflectors!
Cool, figured I'd get Markky's comments out of the way before he gets here.
Snark aside, wish I could be there to voice my support for safer streets but I'll already be rolling into the office at 8am.
Spread the word!
Wow.
That street looks pretty busy with no visible safe shoulder. I think one would be taking their life in their hands to ride a bike on the same.
I mean the road crosses the Pike at one point. Yikes.

You Cannot Rely On The State To Rebuild It As A Safer Road ...
... Without public pressure, they'll design it with only motor vehicles in mind, and with no regard for the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians.
As evidence: this bridge on State Road 145 (Revere Beach Parkway where it crosses over the Blue Line) was just completely rebuilt; but they made it exactly the same as it was before!
A six-lane divided highway, where two lanes would be sufficient. One side of the road has a very narrow sidewalk; the other side doesn't even have a shoulder. And, of course, there are no bike lanes at all.
The road is an important pedestrian and bicycle corridor, and this bridge is just two blocks from the beach. Because of the road's geometry; on a curve as it crosses the bridge; there is a dangerous obstruction of visibility for the cars that speed across the stretch, which has the appearance of a limited-access highway.
It's too late to change the outcome of this SR-145 bridge project (though there's absolutely no reason why it can't be re-marked as four lanes instead of six, to add shoulders and/or bike lanes.)
Hopefully enough Alstonians will rally to convince TPTB that rebuilding highways using dangerous, pedestrian-inconsiderate 1950's designs is simply not acceptable anymore.
Adding: Don't think you can't make a difference; as my friend, Harry, will tell you:
