Storrowing narrowly avoided
By adamg on Sun, 09/07/2014 - 1:02pm
Roving UHub photography Anthony Macchi couldn't rove very far around 11:30 this morning thanks to the driver of a U-Haul truck that suddenly realized he or she wasn't going to come out of the Storrow tunnel unscathed.
"Thought we were in the clear after the 1st," he writes.

Actually, a far more vague "CARS ONLY"
Which could mean "no bikes or pedestrians" or "no trucks"
In some places signage is only visible after the vehicle has committed to getting on Storrow.
What exactly is vague about
What exactly is vague about "CARS ONLY?"
Yeah, what is so vague about
Yeah, what is so vague about "CARS OLNY"?!!
Trucks vs. Cars
Some people - not ME, I emphasize - might think a sign saying "Cars Only" means just "No bicycles, no pedestrians, no pogo sticks, no skateboards, only motorized vehicles."
Another for instance: Would a person riding a motorcycle, which is certainly not a car, see such a sign and say to himself, "Oops! It says 'Cars Only', so that lets me out. I'd better find another route!" Of course not. So saying "Cars Only" is not as clear cut as some may think.
(I once prevented a Storrowing, when I was a passenger in a rented truck, by grabbing my buddy's arm and saying, "Don't go there!", jusr as he was about to get on Storrow. So I know what it means. But he didn't. It happens.)

Garden State Parkway
The GSP used to prohibit motorcycles, long ago, for no safety-related reason, just that people didn't like motorcycles. I'm told that the late Malcolm Forbes, NJ resident and motorcyclist, lobbied to have the law changed. When I first moved to Boston and saw "CARS ONLY", I wondered if motorcycles were banned on Storrow and Memorial Drives.
That sign that was up for two
That sign that was up for two days, almost a year ago?
Yet it still lives
On Google Street view.
Hey, I defend the DCR and their signage, but CARS OLNY did happen.
For two days. Almost a year
For two days. Almost a year ago. Time to move on.
But it happened
All I I know is that 4 days from now, you will be insufferable. "Come on people, it was a bad morning 13 years ago. Let's move on now."
Shhhhh, you're ruining the
Shhhhh, you're ruining the circle-jerk. People on here love "storrowing", turkeys, globe direct, and that Todd English guy (still not sure why).

CLEARANCE: 11.5'
UHaul makes it easy to know what your max height is -- you see if every time you look in the side mirror. If the number on the sign is lower then the number on the truck you ain't going to fit. Car or truck be dammed.
I suppose the issue is...
Even if your truck fits under the clearance limit, it shouldn't be on Storrow Drive.
Or so I thought at first, but then I realize it's somewhat unclear what defines a "car" in this case- I mean, pickup trucks seem to use the road without problem.

...what, they were gonna raise the bridges?
