Gender, not race the issue
How can anyone look at the data and not see the primary issue is race? Its MALE cops shooting (etc.) MALE suspects and MALE subjects shooting MALE cops. Race is only a minor correlation in comparison. Rampant misandry!

Its HOMO-cide. Man on man violence and black on black violence. The victims of black criminals are not cops or whites as much as other blacks. By looking at cops vs blacks resisting arrest, you are focusing on some trees instead of the forest.
If you look at police shootings, they too are done by men. Female cops shooting are rare, despite being more likely to have trouble than a man subduing a (male) criminal resisting arrest.

Give the BPD their due
While there is always work to do/ways to improve, the BPD have been conducting themselves fairly professionally as of late in how they have disarmed and arrested suspects in the past couple of months.
Boston doesn't have the same sort of extreme budget for payments for police misbehavior that NYC does - they don't seem to have the Us vs. Them culture problems going on to the degree that we are seeing in other cities.
There is still a nationwide problem of lack of accountability for police forces that are allowed to police themselves - but that problem goes way beyond Boston. In the meantime, the occupying army mentality isn't as strong here. This is a good thing.
The NYC Police force has been notoriously badly behaved....

I agree with Swirlygrrl - you have to look individually at each town or city. I feel we are all in this together in Boston. I can't speak to the other towns, or what it was like before the current Commissioner.

This quote captures exactly what I despise about the conservative take on such issues, the simple-minded, black-and-white perspective: "You either fully support the police / our troops / the President (but only if he's a Republican), or you hate them and are a Commie / radical / leftist."
It is entirely possible to love and honor our cops and hate their commanders' tolerance for unwarranted use of lethal force, to love and honor our troops and hate the wars we send them into under false pretenses, to love and honor our democracy while disagreeing with the President's policies. But only if you're enough of a grownup to recognize that the world isn't a Hollywood Western.

to be a food writer and kielbasa lover -- Polish sausage was about the closest to, ahem, "ethnic" food that ever came out of my mom's kitchen -- to have never heard of the Chicopee World Kielbasa Festival till now. Wish I could go
I would love to go, but I'm out of town for the holidays. The police deserve and have earned our support. There are rampant killings and shootings targeting just in the past week. The recent assassination in NY (Attorney General Eric Holder's words, not mine), another cop shot in a Saint Louis suburb, and first responders shot in Jacksonville, Florida.
We should thank the police and first responders for putting themselves in harms way to protect us. What's the alternative? Have the Bloods and the Crips patrol the streets? Or maybe the protesters could protect us from thieves and rapists. Methinks they wouldn't last 2 seconds.
