The few, the proud, the passive aggressive
By adamg on Thu, 02/19/2015 - 4:53pm
Curt Nickisch spotted this note on a van in Cambridge today. You know, if only the note writer had used a smaller font, he could have included the rest of his feelings:
And I don't like nobody touchin' MY STUFF. Just keep your meathooks off. If I catch any of you guys in my stuff, I'll kill you.

The notes thing has jumped
The notes thing has jumped the shark.
No putting snow near his van
He must spend a lot of time screaming at the wind
(No subject)
Lighten up, Francis
He cleared around his van...
but it appears that he did not clear off his van?
Didn't want to risk getting
Didn't want to risk getting any snow around the van, he is clearly very concerned about that happening.
In reality he spent 20
In reality he spent 20 minutes brushing snow off his van and failed gym class in high school.
if i spend a few hours
if i spend a few hours cleaning an mbta bus, is it mine for a few days?
a few hours
No, but that three fourths of a seat can be.
I suggested a couple of weeks back...
on another forum, that they should pass a law stating that if you dig out a car, it's yours until the snow emergency is over. Basically, pick a car, and if you dig it out, the owner is forced to hand over the keys. It's only fair.
yeah, it was hard work!
yeah, it was hard work!
Semper Fidelis, Marine, from
Semper Fidelis, Marine, from Southie
Can you read? Not Southie,
Can you read? Not Southie, Cambridge:
I think
I think The Fox was giving his regards from Southie. It was kind of clumsy, but removing what's in between the commas leaves "Semper Fidelis from Southie". If it read "Semper Fidelis, Marine from Southie", then we could get our pedant dander up a bit. Then again, I'm just learning this whole grammar thing as I go along, so I could very well be wrong.
"Former" Marine?
As someone who is not a Marine but probably wishes that he were, isn't "former" Marine incorrect? I.e. Once a Marine, Always A Marine?
So should it be
a) Retired Marine?
b) Not currently in active service Marine?
c) Just "Marine" (with no leading adjectives)?
I'm going with "c".
PS "Grunts can do anything." I believe it.
You should also consider
d) Dishonorably discharged from service - which would legitimately qualify as "Former Marine."
Ex-marine is the no go.
Ex-marine is the no go. Former marine is acceptable to most.
Stand the fuck by
Good to know that universalhub looks down on people who served their country. You openly mock the man for being a Marine, im glad you enjoy the freedom of speech he fought to give you. The guy left a note, hes frustrated, we all are; but you want to put him on blast for it? You all should be a fucking shamed of yourselves.
Oh, please
Yes, thanks to the Marines for helping defend our country, our freedom and our way of life.
But this guy is not defending our freedoms at this point; he's down in the snow and ice and mud with the rest of us.
Our way of life
Space savers are part of our way of life. That is what he is defending. Otherwise, our parking spots will soon be claimed by the black flags of ISIS.
Actually, I think this response from STFB is an ironic jest, but I may be wrong.
welcome
Enjoy scrolling through the past week plus (for starters) of posts here, where you will see other note-writers, whose military status remains unknown, also "put on blast."
I look down on people who
I look down on people who make threats of violence for trivial perceived slights (like the snow falling on "their" space). Whether they served in the armed forces or not is immaterial.
But all he's defending is his
But all he's defending is his car, and he's threatening everyone by invoking his Marine status. With privilege comes responsibility. Shame on him.
we don't look down on all marines....
.... just those that use their military service as a threat towards strangers.
Something tells me this asshole wasn't fighting for my free speech, but probably working out some aggression and/or authority issues. I have no shame talking down cowardly assholes that expect me to shit my pants because he served.
For fucks sake.
Supporting "the troops" is meaningless. It's tantamount to saying "support the Floridians," or "support auto mechanics."
The post is criticizing an individual, who is threatening violence, with no provocation.
A Tangent Here
The Floridians and auto mechanics aren't flippantly called murderers and thugs by people who mix them up with the people they work for. "The Troops" leave their families and friends, put their lives on hold, get shot at or worse, all for shitty pay and at the behest of people deciding a foreign policy that "The Troops" have no input on. If they're lucky they come back to a country that expected them to kill or die with no warning on one day and then act like a buttoned-down square the next. Yes, they signed up for it, but so do people who work in convenience stores or cut down trees and that doesn't make their jobs any harder or less dangerous. Moreover, while they haven't repelled any invasions in a while, their presence and willingness to do all this dirty work does, actually, protect us from other countries who would love to run the vast expanses of temperate farmland and industrial sites joined by easily-traversed highways that exist here. I'm not a military guy. I never was. My only relatives in the service were generations ago. But I've given this some thought over the years and I really am grateful to them.
All that being said, space saving is a dumb policy and notes are for cowards. I agree with your last sentence 100%.
Well...
Clearly you're not a Gawker reader.
status as a Marine does not
status as a Marine does not automatically make one forever immune to all criticism, especially when said Marine is acting like a selfish jerk; a most un-Marinely trait indeed.
Tell me...?
Who exactly was threatening my freedom of speech that this Marine fought for?
Who's threatening your freedom of speech?
Draw a cartoon of Mohammed and publish it somewhere with your name and address, they'll likely introduce themselves eventually.
The religion of peace.
"Former marine"? No such
"Former marine"? No such thing. Probably served in Counterstrike.
Censorship
Can you imagine the comments that are censored. That's the problem when one person controls what's posted. Bunch of Globe wannabes.
How about getting a user name

Just register, or STFU.
I don't get it
Why do people lose all sense of perspective and fall all over themselves to defend anything or anyone when the military is involved? There's an appropriate sense of gratitude and patriotism and there's... this grandstanding.
This dude's temper tantrum had nothing to do with his service until he brought it up and used it as an implied threat. Honestly, how does that not deserve a little harmless derision?
passive aggressive?
I don't know, man. That sounds pretty straight-ahead aggressive to me.
There are no Former Marines
Oo Rah!
Maybe he went POG after his
Maybe he went POG after his stint in infantry
We know one thing
He went POS for sure.
Such a tough man!
Such a tough man!
Have respect
for our Veterans who seved this country.
It's possible
to have respect for veterans while still finding them human, fallible, and amusing.
People should respect their
People should respect their neighbors just as equally
So you think it's OK to be an
So you think it's OK to be an asshole and threaten people just because someone is a veteran?
New verb for today
Can you tell me what "seved" means?
Is it an archaic form of "sieved"? Because that would be totally understandable.
I have great respect for those who have sieved - particularly while making jam.
SIR YES SIR
SIR YES SIR
Maybe it's a trap...
You know, like, anybody read the Hunger Games? I haven't, but my friend told me a bit about it...something about apples hitting land mines and blowing up stuff...
Maybe, if you throw snow within two feet of his vehicle, the snow hits a mine and you get blown up.
Sure, the car goes too, but...
This fellow dishonors Marines
by using his former duty in the Marine Corps as an implied threat of retaliation. Claiming he was a Marine (which of course could be a lie) in this note is to use that former service to intimidate.
If this fellow fought for freedom of speech then he also fought for (at least in theory) the belief that that all people are equal. Since public space belongs to everyone and everyone is equal he "owns" the space equally with everyone else. Therefore anyone else has an equal right to use the space no matter how much snow he shoveled.
Dude.
That's deep, man.
Not especially deep,
but spot-on, nonetheless.
Here's one of the lines
Dude, your space is being respected. When people move snow, it ends up by other people's cars. Heck, there's a 5 foot high mound between the 2 SUVs in front of my house, and you better believe snow falls down when one driver or the other shovels. In this winter of discontent, this is not the worst thing in the world.
On the other hand, perhaps PTSD?
I just hope
....that this is all over soon, before the rest of the country takes notice of how we are just about ready to butcher each other over fucking parking spaces and a space on a train cart.
don't touch me don't touch me
...this guy as a child may not have liked the feel of grass under his feet or scratchy clothes...
I give him props for using a resealable bag
I doubt it
He wouldn't make it more than a day in Basic if he was like that.
I'm betting that this is "territorial pissings" and "needs to reconsider living in a city".
