Boston Police chase into Cambridge

Just before 10:30 AM, 6 or more marked and unmarked Boston Police cars raced up Marlborough Street, in the Back Bay, the wrong way, turned onto Mass Ave and headed into Cambridge.

I returned home and turned on a police radio and heard reports that a police car was damaged but the officer was not hurt.

The car was to be towed from 99 Sixth Street, Cambridge.

There was talk about a bank but I can't confirm that this was the reason for the chase or a separate incident.

Finally, a police official came on and thanked everyone - the dispatchers, officers involved in the arrest, anti-crime squad, detail and foot patrol officers who helped. He said that robberies are a big problem and this arrest will help.

I was walking down the Old Sixth Street walk way in Cambridge towards Broadway around that time and three police cars came up the other way. As we approached Broadway, we saw a Boston police car and State police car headed up Broadway (away from Boston).

I was heading toward the SUV, when it went past the new police station (not smart!)it appeared to leave the ground due to the dip at Rogers St. Then he tried to turn right at Bent St and crashed into the corner house on Bent St. He tried to get out of the car but the door was wedged against the house somewhat so he was trapped.

Louis Fortier, a.k.a. Louis Broussard, 27, of South Boston, and Lance Smith, 31, of no fixed address, both pleaded innocent to a variety of charges today, then were ordered held because of their lack of a giant sum of money, according to the Suffolk County DA's office, which provides this account of yesterday's events:

Shortly after 10:00 yesterday morning, Fortier allegedly handed a bank teller a note reading, "Robbery, no alarms, no dye packs, no problems, 100s and 50s, hurry up," while telling him to "get the drawer open now." Meanwhile, Smith allegedly stood by the bank manager's office and said, "Don't move, don't touch any buttons," while gesturing from his jacket pocket as if holding a firearm.

When the teller gave Fortier a sum of cash totaling just $400, Fortier allegedly became incensed.

"What the hell is this," he allegedly exclaimed, leaping over the counter. "I'm going to mess you up. Give me some more money, come on."

As all eyes turned to Fortier, the bank manager hit an alarm button, prompting Smith to shout, "We got to get out of here."

The men fled the scene in a bright red sport-utility vehicle owned by a Braintree man. Witnesses provided a description to responding Boston Police, who soon broadcast its direction and whereabouts. Multiple officers observed it and tried to stop it several times, including on Commonwealth Avenue, where Fortier allegedly accelerated toward the officers, almost striking them.

Fortier allegedly sped down Massachusetts Avenue and over the Harvard Bridge into Cambridge. Boston Police notified their Cantabrigian counterparts, who undertook their own response as the chase entered their city.

It was at the intersection of Sixth and Charles streets, a short distance from the new Cambridge Police headquarters, that Fortier drove up onto the sidewalk and collided with a residential drainpipe. The caravan of cruisers approached the suspect vehicle, at which point Fortier allegedly threw the SUV into reverse and tried to ram his way free, nearly striking two more officers. Though he caused significant body damage to the officer's cruiser, Fortier's alleged efforts were unsuccessful and both he and his accomplice were taken into custody.
